Copenhagen Zoo met with online rage after putting down healthy giraffe to stop inbreeding

Copenhagen Zoo killed a 2-year-old giraffe and fed its remains to lions as visitors watched, ignoring a petition signed by thousands and offers from other zoos and a private individual to save the animal.

Marius, a healthy male, was put down Sunday using a bolt pistol, said zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro. Visitors, including children, were invited to watch while the giraffe was then skinned and fed to the lions.

Marius' plight triggered a wave of online protests and renewed debate about the conditions of zoo animals. Before the giraffe was killed, an online petition to save it had received more than 20,000 signatures.

But the public feeding of Marius' remains to the lions was popular at Copenhagen Zoo. Stenbaek Bro said it allowed parents to decide whether their children should watch what the zoo regards as an important display of scientific knowledge about animals.

Pretty humane. By the time you’d feel the bolt, you’d already be dead.

You may be right but nobody has survived to tell how it feels.

They owned the giraffe. Plenty of them in the wild. Lions do eat giraffe (when they can catch it).

I don’t see what the problem is.

(Although if it were me I would have taken the 680K that was offered, and bred another giraffe for sale! You can feed a lot of animals for 680K)

He was no longer useful to the zoo, and therefore expendable, so they fed him to lions for the children to watch. Kinky, but not original.

The Romans liked to watch animals (later Christians) and all sorts being fed to the lions. The kids loved it.

But kids, that ain’t nothing. Wait till Obamacare fully kicks in. It’s going to be fun to watch grandpa and other expendable people try to outrun the lions.

why did they not castrate him? Seriously. It would have been more humane than killing him. He was apparently a healthy giraffe.

I suppose the PETA folks would have protested that too???

Reminds me of the stories where some animal protection group will come in and slaughter a bunch of animals to protect the animals. Don’t ever get caught with a pet squirrel you rescued.

I guess the zoo keepers had never herd of geldings, whethers, or calf fries.

I don’t hear the lions complaining.
