I remember in '78 when Van Halen drop-kicked the John Travolta Saturday Night Fever Disco craze to the sidelines and brought R&R back to its rightful place on top of the heap.

I'd like to see history repeat itself, this time it would happen to the choreographed aerobic-dancing bubble-gum "pop" and the rap "music" of today.

But record companies aren't what they were in yesteryear. They don't have the power to make or break bands as they once did. I see that as a good thing, but how does a good R&R band break out today?

For me, it was hearing "Sultans of Swing" on the car radio for the first time.

It's a pretty shopworn standard now, but after my first listen to Knopfler pulling those luscious chords out of the Strat, I said to myself, "Dear God, can the seventies finally be coming to and end??"

The tried and true method... Tour like hell and be better live than in the studio. See Halestorm for a crash course ;)

Rode it to a Grammy.
