Vanity - Was Sochi chosen for the Winter Olympics in order to push "global warming"?

Posted on 02/13/2014 8:38:40 AM PST by Perdogg

I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but was Sochi, Russia chosen to push global warming because of the naturally mild climate?

Sochi is a resort on the Black Sea where many Russian use to flee the harsh winters Moscow and St Petersburg.

When the temperature is 0 degrees in Moscow - a winter temperature of 60 feels like summer.

Had it not been for the cold winter in the US, the warmist cult would try to point at Sochi "as another example with global warming".

No.

Sochi was chosen because of massive corruption in the IOC. Nothing more, nothing less.

I am thinking it had more to do with the fact that Putin and his cronies had large real estate and business holdings in the area and he wanted to use taxpayer and international money to fix up his resort.

Same thing Harry Reid does.

I don’t think so. Climate might be milder on the Black Sea but the nearby mountains are high enough for the temperature to be lower and for snow not to melt most of the time.

Should have picked Volgograd.

I heard they have had some pretty cold winters.

I bet some of it had to do with Russia’s oil and gas contracts basically owning Europe’s energy needs.

From the few pics I’ve seen, there’s not much snow there. The Black Sea for a winter venue?

That great and renowned climate scientist Rachel Maddow has said, hotter, colder, it’s all climate change. And it’s all, ehem...man made.

Her too. Tough break.

I forget who I heard on TV, while I was doing dishes, maybe Dennis Miller. He said the only place where it wasn’t freezing cold this week was at The Winter Olympics!

Picking somewhere with a mild climate and nearby mountains seems reasonable.

This would also be the exact situation in Vancouver.

Pretty much sums it up. The offered the IOC committee more "stuff". The runner-up to Sochi was Pyeongchang, South Korea, who also got jilted in 2010 vote for Vancouver by three votes. Sochi beat it by four votes. Guess who is going to host the 2018 Winter Olympics?

The Olympics before that (2006) was still reeling from the corruption which had been publicized so it was informally decided that it was Europe's turn. Turin, Italy beat the only other bidder (Sion, Switzerland) that year.

The low-key 2006 affair was in response to the 2002 award to Salt Lake City when it was reveled that bribery and free stuff went into the 1998 award to Nagano, Japan which had beat Salt Lake City by 4 votes in the final round. The IOC has hoped to keep their way of doing business off the radar screen by awarding Salt Lake City the 2002 edition by an overwhelming 54-14 vote over its nearest competitor in the first round.

The sheer margin of that vote aroused suspicions. The Nagano bid team and the Salt Lake City bid team compared notes and both decided to go public. But that was then and this is now, so the IOC has gone back to business as usual.

At this point, it looks like Atlanta would have been a better choice.

The jet stream that used to push cold air down over that part of Russia has shifted around the globe and is now affecting the North American continent. It will continue to shift. Forever.
