Student After-school Programs, Field Trips, and PSAL Games are Operating on a Normal Schedule

Schools will be open today, Friday, February 14, 2014. Families with busing questions should contact the Office of Pupil Transportation at 718-392-8855. We understand that weather conditions may be challenging for families. As always, parents should exercise their own judgment with regard to their children. Safety is a top priority for the Department, and we make these decisions only after careful consideration. We want to thank parents, students, and educators for your cooperation during this very difficult winter.

The insanity strikes again! It wasn't enough that I had to take 3 different buses during a raging blizzard Thursday morning, standing in the street to wait for them because you couldn't climb the 2-3' high piles of last week's snow lining the curb, walking over many never-shoveled sidewalks slick as glass, almost twisting my ankle as I fell into a pothole in the street, sitting blindly on the near-empty buses you couldn't see out of due to the steamed-up windows, hearing the bus driver tell me that his route has not been plowed at all, to arrive at a school with a laughable percentage of attendance. Out of 4 classes, I had 2 students in one, 3 students in another, 3 students in a third and wow, 4 students attending a fourth class. No lessons were taught, and most students refused to do anything even vaguely academic. They slept, listened to ipods they refused to put away, wandered the halls, etc. I was furious at having really endangered my safety for this nonsense. And then there was the equally dangerous trip home, wherein the water repellency of my boots gave out and I was walking and walking with feet drenched in icy cold water. I feel like I've been beaten up all over with baseball bats, so achy and sore all over. And if this wasn't enough, there was no functioning radiator in my co-op. I took off my boots and had no hot radiator to dry them over. It was only 65 degrees in here when I got home! I called our maintenance emergency line and thank G-d someone came over to bleed all the radiators and get them working again.

And now, this senile Chancellor has declared Friday 2/14/14, schools will be open again. Never mind that it's snowing furiously as I type this, or that there is nowhere for the earlier rain to run off to, so it's going to freeze into sheets of glazed ice to walk over. She even has the unmitigated chutzpah to state that "safety is a top priority for the Department"!

Did anyone catch her mega faux-pas earlier today at a news conference whereupon she glanced out the window before the changeover to rain and declared it to be a "beautiful day"?

Ah New York politics at their finest. This type of stuff can not be made up so it must come naturally.

It’s going to be an endless comedy day after day. I so glad that i’ve stocked up on popcorn.

New York you really, really have outdone yourselves this time, you are now known as the comedy center of the east coast.

It’s going to be treacherous on Friday. Every crosswalk has a mini-lake in front of it, which will be a mini-skating rink. A few siphons would have solved the problem, but no.

This is ridiculous. My sister commutes to NYC from Jersey in one of those cute water taxis. Last night it took her over four hours to go home. Her company had the prudence to tell everyone to telecommute

Didn’t the school chancellor see some poor woman in BKlyn was killed by a snowplow? This is madness. The kids should be home.

You stay safe.

Even the kids think the mayor is stupid. At least that’s what one kid tweeted to him (”UR stupid”.)
