Full headline:

From Mongol warriors to Silk Road traders: Interactive map reveals how fallen European empires have left their lasting stamp on the world's gene-pools

Map shows the mixing of genes of 95 different populations across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America It reveals colonialism, the Arab slave trade and European traders on the Silk Road mixing with people in China Scientists pinpointed time when mixing took place by looking areas of DNA that exchanged genetic information To use the map, double click on the location you want to view. You can then use the scroll bar to zoom in and out Blue circles indicate the local populations. Orange shows the population that this group may have mixed with

DNA footprints left in the wake of ancient warriors can unravel long-held secrets about a country’s past. Now, for the first time, scientists have mapped the DNA of 95 different populations to see if they can paint a clearer picture of major historical events. This incredible interactive map looks at the mixing of genes in major populations in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America spanning over the last four millennia.

The group with the longest time since admixture is the Kalash from Pakistan. They have an ancient inferred event prior to 206BCE, involving mixing between a more European and West Asian group, and a more Central/South Asian group

‘We made some very surprising discoveries,’ Dr Garrett Hellenthal of the University College London Genetics Institute told MailOnline.

Interesting how quick they were to dismiss the Israeli connection.

the other interesting thing about that pima information... none of them have Spanish ancestors... they are almost completely Mayan, as I have always suspected.

Mexicans are nothing more than Native American Indians descended from the Mayans and Aztecs of central and south America.

England made the mistake of letting the savage it conquered immigrate directly into the heart of the empire. And now its homeland is in deadly peril.

In my opinion, Europeans are the descendants of the Neanderthals who mixed with later waves of immigrants from the Mediterranean.

The Roman Army left its DNA in the population of Britain. My Thomas Jefferson ancestors have Lebanese DNA that probably came from the Roman Legion that was stationed near their ancestral home.

The reality is that all nations are comprised of the descendants of immigrants. Even the so-called Native American came over the Siberian land bridge 20,000 years ago.

I cringe when I hear people say, "We are a nation of immigrants." No, we are not. 85% of us were born here.

Reading Gibbon (Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire) and reading other historical accounts ... it’s obvious that DNA would be dispersed far and wide.

Gibbon and many other authors record how a major perk for victorious armies was gathering the subject people and transporting them en masse (and sometimes to distances thousands of miles away from their homes) to be sold as slaves.

Slaves were currency in the ancient world.

For many centuries, this was a very typical practice and I am sure accounts for the wide disbursement of DNA

You’re most welcome. And thank YOU for your service (my Uncle Phil was in a tank during the Battle of the Bulge and managed to survive).

My thanks to your Uncle Phil. The Bulge was a heck of a battle, and our guys in the Shermans and Stuarts had a heck of a job battling the German MkIVs, Panthers, and Tigers. And the winter of 1944 was the worst of the 20th century to that time.
