On Saturday in Sochi, forward T.J. Oshie scored four goals in a climactic shootout to lead the United States to a dramatic victory over Russia. This was not the Miracle on Icethis was no massive mismatch, Al Michaels was not on the microphone, and the letters CCCP were not emblazoned across the Russians chests. Even so, its impossible to suppress a swell of patriotic pride when the USA takes down Russia on Olympic ice. That goes double when the American hero hails from Hockeytown, USA.
Earlier this month, the New York Times Jeré Longman filed a dispatch from Warroad, Minn., a town of 1,781 that, amazingly, is the hometown of both T.J. Oshie and Gigi Marvin of the U.S. womens hockey team. (Oshie and Marvin were the King and Queen of Warroads Frosty Festival in 2005.) The U.S. men have never won a gold medal without a gent from Warroad on the roster.

I like seeing the reporters interview hockey players without having translators.
This kid was amazing. As was the goalie, from down the road in Milford CT.
Here’s why Fedor Tyutin’s third period goal was disallowed

471 - DISALLOWING A GOAL
a) No goal shall be allowed:
1. If an attacking player deliberately kicks, throws or bats with the hands or otherwise
directs the puck by any means other than his stick into the goal net even if the puck
has been further deflected by any player, goalkeeper or official,
2. If an attacking player contacted the puck with the stick above the cross bar,
3. If the puck has been directly deflected into the goal net off an official,
4. If an attacking player stands or holds his stick in the goal crease when the puck
enters the goal net, unless he has been physically interfered with, by the action
of any defending player so as to cause him to be in the goal crease when the puck
enters the goal net, unless if in the opinion of the Referee, he had sufficient time
to get out of the crease or unless Rule 470 applies.
5. If the goal net has been displaced from its normal position, or the frame of the goal
net is not completely flat on the ice.
Point 5 is the pertinent part. If the integrity of the net is altered at all, it’s no goal. Good luck for Team USA.
He is NOT a hero. He could be a celebrity figure; an icon, a role model, a celebrated sportsman, ..but he NOT a hero. American’s love to over-use and abuse this word.
I think you are looking for “misuse.”
It’s amazing the allegiances which change when players put on a new sweater.
Last spring I despised Patrick Kane (as a Bruins fan). Yet this morning I jumped off the couch, about 10 feet in the air, when he went in on his breakaway in the third.
I agree.
I tend to follow the player hence my disappointment in today’s game. PS Pavel had a great game so I am somewhat happy even if he came out on the losing end.
“The American heroes are wearing camo. That’s not me.” - TJ Oshie
he gets it :)
