Veterans, If You Use Windows There’s a New Internet Explorer Hack You Need to Know About

A security flaw has just discovered that lets hackers prey on visitors to a military veterans web page via Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser.

According to Reuters, Security firm FireEye Inc. discovered the attacks against Internet Explorer 10 this week, saying hundreds or thousands of machines have been infected. FireEye said the culprits broke into the website of U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars and inserted a link that redirected visitors to a malicious web page that contained the infectious code in Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash software.

FireEye researcher Darien Kindlund said hackers were probably seeking information from the machines of former and current military personnel and that the campaign shared some infrastructure and techniques previously attributed to groups in mainland China.

He said planting backdoors on the machines of VFW members and site visitors to collect military intelligence was a possible goal.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company was aware of the “targeted” attacks and was investigating. “We will take action to help protect customers,” said spokesman Scott Whiteaker.

It’s generally a good idea to be aware of “flash cookies” as well. Typically, browsers allow you to delete website cookies. But invisibly, many sites are creating backup cookies using your flash player, so if you delete their ordinary cookie, its data is restored by the flash cookie.

However, Adobe has a utility website that not only allows you to see the flash cookies on your machine, but allows you to delete them.

When you go to this page, the image you see on your screen is not a picture, but a functional control panel that is listing your current flash cookies.

One last tip, this is settings manager number 7. If you want to see the others, change the URL number (for example, to settings_manager06.html). While the others are less useful, they do contain some interesting information.

Disable Flash and no worries. Nobody should be running Flash Player. Disable it in your settings.

Asked that question of Sin in military. He sez hid card access thingie won't work otherwise.. I thought the 'browser war' stuff was over and done..

Unless the military is building their websites with Front Page.. Then there could be problems with anything but IE...

The only use for IE is to get one of the other browsers. I use Firefox, and before that I used Netscape. Never used IE, except at work when I had no choice.
