I've flown with lots of high time retired military and active civil pilots who will read back an instruction correctly to ATC and then execute the turn in the wrong direction. It doesn't seem to correlate with skill as a pilot, but seems like one of those brain fade events. Pilots do a lot better with the up/down thing usually.
For that reason, and only for that, I would tend to give the officious little Nye guy a pass. Just a 'senior moment' that will soon pass. Bow tie too tight probably.
