Still unknown if woman killed by Bastrop deputy was armed Sheriff's office won't release 911 calls, video in officer-involved shooting

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas -- A modest house in Bastrop is now missing the person who made it home, Yvette Smith.

"She was strong hearted, you know," said Anthony Bell, speaking of his mother. "Loving and caring, would do anything for her children. She worked three jobs if she had to. If you needed anything, she was willing to give you whatever she had."

Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Bastrop County sheriffs were called to a home on Zimmerman Avenue. The caller said two men, who KVUE News has learned are father and son, were fighting over a gun.

When deputies arrived, one of the men was outside. The other was inside. Smith came to the door and was shot by 28-year-old Deputy Daniel Willis. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

Initially, investigators said Smith had a gun and didn't follow the deputy's commands. Hours later, they retracted that statement saying they don't know if Smith had a gun.

The home owner and neighbors said she did not.

"This is a big tragedy for everybody, because, I mean, we feel unsafe now. I mean, an officer shot somebody without the person being armed," said neighbor Joe Martinez. "It just hurts, because now you can't trust an officer here."

*****

The Texas Rangers and Bastrop County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting.

I work hard long hours and fall into the 39.5% tax bracket, and that’s fair? the harder and longer I work, I am to be punished?

Flat tax is the only thing I’d ever agree to, and no more than 10%.

If you think that it’s OK for a person making over $100,000 or $150,000 to pay the same rate as a person making less than $40,000 or even $30,000, that is your right, but I completely disagree. I do believe that there should be reasonable limits on the top rate, an everyone should have to pay something. I also believe that food stamps and other welfare benefits should be taxable. When the progressive rate becomes redistribution, then it has gone too far.

On the 9% flat tax...

Simple analysis yields a tax rate of 17% to cover current federal spending, not including the trillion dollar “stimulus” or reductions of national debt. A flat rate tax would have to be at least twice your 9% stated rate. Times have changed remarkably since Steve Forbes put forth his flat rate plan.

Simple analysys of the economy as with taxes they way that taxes are. An absolute 9% flat rate will generate new economic activity such that the government will take increasingly more. The government will not, however get an increasing percentage. That will aggravate the left to no end. Currently black market income will surface. We don’t think of “black market” in the context of the USA but it exists and is not tiny. Couple a 9% rate , ether of total personal income (my preference) or of personal, interest, corporate income and capital gains etc. with elimination of government interference in the economy (including all forms ofgovernment welfare and charity) and what is left is economic advance way beyond anything to date. Add in government recognition of the Judaeo Christian basis of the nation and we will have heavily trafficked resorts on Mars in a generation.

Thar's all. She just came to the door.

You mean "Her own door" right?

1. Tell me how is it possible it's "Still unknown if woman shot to death by Bastrop deputy was armed"?

2. Why did the cops initially state she was armed, and then retract that statement? How in tarnation does work?

Federal spending as a percent of GDP was over 22% last year. Your figure of 9% isn’t even in the ball park. You might be able to start at 18% and gradually drop the rate if, and when, the GDP grows. The real problem is the inability to freeze federal spending.

You argue with yourself. Progressive tax is for two purposes. To redistribute wealth and punish success. Wealth is not finite. If you make a million and I don’t it’s not your income stopping me. We’re doing something different from each other. When I was starting out I barely survived. Now I thrive. But I now pay a higher % in taxes before I spend a dime. If you think that’s right. Vote liberal or RINO. I am being punished for success by you.

You want to keep the government huge with that 22% figure. At 9% it will grow much faster because the economy will grow much faster. Far more money will be subject to that 9% than is subject to tax rates of any kind presently. And flat 9% won’t have to pay for a very expensive IRS. I hate it when people who seem to believe they are conservatives accept the government as it is and on top of that can’t see beyond static analysis.
