Just bought a >38 Special Colt Commando nickel plated(old Police issue) from a friend....Payed $250...Is this an OK deal? What a smooth action on this revolver.

I posted on a gun thread a while back that I was hoping someone would do a simple test with 2 revolvers in 22LR calibre.

5 inch revolver, 10 or 15 yards away, rapid fire.

2 inch revolver, same distance, rapid fire, but the 2 incher would have a laser sight.

I wonder which one would work out to be superior? Perhaps someone with lotsa revolvers could finally say that a laser sight is worth x number of barrel distance...

That is a good test/question...I have another 2 inch 38...That answer would be of interest.

How long is the barrel? Got a laser sight?

Barrel is long enough to stick it in their ribs before you squeeze the trigger and that close you do need any stinking laser sight.

I had a Colt Commando. It was a full size Colt 6-shot revolver in .38 Special using the frame of the Colt Official Police model. The pistol was introduced in 1927 and 48,611 2-inch and 4-inch barrel variants of the “Commando” were built during WW2 for the U.S. government. Finish applied was usually gray manganese phosphate (aka “Parkerizing”) and the guns showed signs of wartime production shortcuts. Approximately 12,000 “Commandos” built during WW2 as 4-inch barrel guns were converted by the Colt factory to 2-inch versions after the end of the war. The 2-inch barrel Commandos were favorites of military intelligence officers and others needing the utility of a snub nose revolver.

I love the 38 Special – don’t know or trust “devastators” or any of the gee whiz trick loadings. I carry the “FBI load” as loaded by Buffalo Bore (and if I get around to duplicating it with my handloads – the “don’t carry handloads for self defense” philosophy is lawyer-proofing, paranoid HOGWASH, I’ll carry that). SOFT gaping hollow point 158 grain gas checked semi wadcutter loaded to +P velocity. They’re stout recoiling in my S&W J frames, but if in a thug-shooting encounter, recoil is not noticed.

Barrel is long enough to stick it in their ribs
***So you’re talking zero meters contact... perhaps you mean that the barrel is SHORT enough to stick into their ribs without getting caught on the way out...

before you squeeze the trigger and that close you do need any stinking laser sight.
***We are obviously talking about a distance far enough where the 5 inch barrel comes into play, or a laser sight. With your scenario, a 1 inch barrel is “long enough” and quicker & easier to pull from a holster or pocket. Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me... ;-)
