My kids have used waterproof toe shoes for their lifeguarding duties. Evidently they work pretty well.
With that outfit she was wearing... she was almost asking for it ! /sarc
I think the point of them is to almost be barefoot, but still have protection. Some runners swear by them because they say you use your foot muscles/tendons as designed.
