GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBSLA.com/AP) – Los Angeles Dodgers great Sandy Koufax was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Andre Ethier during batting practice.Koufax was standing in the bullpen down the third base line when he was hit Friday.
The 78-year-old was struck on the forehead, but told reporters as he walked off the field that he was fine.

If it were Drysdale who got beaned, I’d say it was karma.
God is punishing him for having played on Lag B’Omer in 1961.

In fact he looks very, very good.
My favorite pitcher as a kid.
A guy I know got to sit in the dugout one time as a kid. He said that Koufax was the nicest guy there. A lot of the other players ignored him but Sandy talked to him.
Glad Sandy is okay!
He was a great pitcher for a great team, the LA Dodgers.
I was a Dodgers fan when Koufax was in his prime. Great pitcher. (Maybe one reason he got hit is that he’s not used to the ball being hit. Back when he pitched, it rarely was.)
I was a very young Phillies fan. The only pitchers I can think of who ever came close to Sandy: Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson, and Satchel Paige. Maybe Bob Feller (used to see him every March when the Cleveland Native Americans spring-trained in Winter Haven), I'll leave that for someone else to prove or disprove...

I was a Dodger fan when Robinson came up, when Koufax came up as a $10000.00?? Bonus Baby - When they signed the Bonus Babys in the ‘day’ they had to go directly to the Major Leagues for a couple of years.
I guess they figured if you could afford to spend an ‘outlandish’ amount of money for an unknown, you could afford to put him on the ‘big team’.
Also remember when Sal “The Barber” Maglie came to the Dodgers from the Giants (by way of Cleveland).
Maglies nickname came not from his haircutting abilities BUT the close shaves he gave as a high and tight fastball pitcher...
Among the many that would not be allowed to play today or would be fined out of the league if his aggressiveness wasn’t toned down.
Another ‘interesting’ nickname was Pee Wee Reese, Reese was tall (5’10” wasn’t considered short back then) and the Pee Wee came from his days a marble shooting champion.
On the other hand, Jack Robinson quit rather than go to the ‘hated’ Giants.
Maybe Schrödinger’s cat would know... ;-)
I used to stay up late listening the the Cardinal's broadcast on KMOX in St. Louis.
One night the Cards played the Dodgers in LA, so it was way dark o'clock back east.
The Cards hit Koufax like they owned him...10 hits, easy as you please.

I find that hard to believe. Not that Koufax had a bad day, but rather that the small ball Dodgers of that era could could score enough runs in a game to overcome ten runs.

I started a bit later. I recall the very day. I was in the sixth grade and watching the Saturday afternoon baseball broadcast on tv (I believe with Dizzy Dean calling the game, but I may be confusing that with another time. Later, of course, Pee Wee Reese became Dizzy’s broadcast partner.) The Dodgers were awesome that day. Robinson hit two home runs, Campanella hit two, and Duke Snider hit one almost over the flag pole in center field. I thought, “Wow! That’s the team for me.” (I was living in the South, and had no favorite at the time.)
As an adult I turned more to other sports. As a child, though, I played Little League, and knew the names and approximate batting averages of everybody on the Dodgers (the names of almost everybody on the other teams too). It was a great time to be a baseball fan.
