SOCHI, Russia -- Teemu Selanne led his team around the ice, with a bronze medal draped around his neck, after he finished off his sixth Olympics with a sweet victory.

If the Finnish Flash is retiring and hanging up his skates after the NHL season, he picked a pretty good way to go out on the world's stage.

The final game at the Olympics turned out well for Finland's Teemu Selanne, who will go out on a high note, writes Pierre LeBrun. Story

Selanne scored two goals and Tuukka Rask had a 27-save shutout, helping Finland rout the United States 5-0 Saturday to win hockey bronze at the Sochi Games.

The 43-year-old, smooth-skating forward with a lightning-quick shot and Jussi Jokinen scored 11 seconds apart early in pivotal second period.

Selanne and his teammates were not finished, scoring three goals in the third against a team that looked like it would rather be at home.

"It was just something special," Selanne said. "I'm so proud."

I was clear beginning with the Canada-US game that this American team did not have the heart or desire to do what it would take to win gold. In the game with Canada, most of the game was played with Canada the aggressor, USA very passive, and today, we were embarrassed 5-0 by a team that didnt care. Is it time to go back to college players who actually care?

A U.S. Team consisting of college players certainly could not have done worse.

I remember standing in a gas station talking to a friend who was working there as the “Miracle On Ice” unfolded. We were laughing, crying, jumping up and down holding on to each other....

We only have a chance to medal using pro players since all the other top hockey countries use pro players. There’s no chance we’d sneak up on anyone the way we did back in 1980 with a brilliant coach (Herb Brooks) that didn’t already have an NHL job.

I’m all for using college players if the NHL refuses to let it’s players go to Korea. Let them take their chances against the Russian KHL players.

If the US fielded a team full of NHL players trying to make sure they didn't pick up an injury that might hamper them once the NHL season resumes, then yeah - time to go back to college players.

It looks like Barry won’t be adding a big hockey win to his legacy. I guess he’ll have to celebrate something else “magical” that he’s done.

The U,S, fielded an excellent hockey team. The NCAA college program is probably the best development system in the world and the growth in American hockey calibre is noticeable. The USA was only interested in beating Canada. This is a rivalry that has been brewing since the Vancouver Games. Unfortunately the USA was outcoached and ran into a very hot goaltender. After losing to Canada the players were a little down and the Finns are very good. Americans should be very proud of these athletes. They represented their country well and generated great excitement internationally right up to the team Canada game.

Excellent point, the lack of physical contact was noticeable giving the game the feel of an all star game.
