Literacy is a skill. Driving is also a skill, but it is better to know to where people are driving, rather than whether they can drive--a nation of people who drive to church will outshine and outlast a nation of people who drive to street-corner meth dealers. By the same token, it is more important what you read, after you learn to read. A group of literate people constantly reading socialist or fascist writings, or pornographic or vulgar-laden writings, would be better off illiterate, as poor of a life as that would be--though of course the best of all is to be literate and fill one's mind with the great writings of humanity.

"I don’t buy a lot of books these days but I have a considerable library on my kindle and read from it every day not to mention all that I read online."

Once I found that you can get all manner of free books for the Kindle PLUS you can use it to borrow books online using your local library card I quit buying physical books except for those I know I will read over and over.

Need to add Memphis Tn to the list, most schools are under threat of state take over. HS Grads who go to JR College and have A/B average math grades most of them have to do remedial Math before they can take courses that need Math. What few graduate that is.

How do they account for electronic books and newspapers? With my Kindle Fire™, wherever I go, my bookstore and library go with me.

If D.C. is the most literate city then literacy obviously is not an indicator of common sense and intelligence.

Bingo. So I’m really surprised Madistan did not show up in the top ten.

Newspapers...who reads them anymore? My local paper has such little content a daily edition isn’t thick enough to line the cat box. I once told the editor that when I read his paper I read the front page, the editorials and the comics and most days couldn’t tell the difference.

I also wonder about the utility of using the number of bookstores as a measure of literacy. I recently heard of something called Amazon.com, which seems to be some sort of a bookseller.

RE: hablamos espanol

Yes, that would be considered literate too (provided you can speak English better or just as well ).

Not much of a survey. Cities like Mesa, Aurora, and Anaheim don’t have daily papers of their own because they’re part of a larger metropolis. That doesn’t make people there illiterate.
