Wal-Mart botches their new 'Buy America' ad campaign
NBC Olympics Coverage ^ | 2/24/2014 | MeganC

Forgive me if someone has posted this already but I searched FR first and found nothing so here goes!

Did anyone see Wal-Mart's new ad during the coverage of the closing ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics last night? Did you just love the images of American factory workers and the inspiring narration about how Wal-Mart is committing to creating jobs in the USA?

And didn't you just love how they reinforced their committment to American jobs with a background track of inspiring music that celebrated the Working Man?

Meaning they used a song called 'Working Man'.

By a band called 'Rush'.

Who are from Canada?

I'm sure Canada appreciates the royalty income their band is generating in a 'Buy American' ad campaign. I'm also not surprised that Wal-Mart didn't even try to find an American band to do their music.

Thank you! I was starting to wonder if I was the only person to notice this!

” ... we don't make many things any longer.”

We still make many products here in the U.S., but those products

1. are generally not the low-value, low-quality junk sold in stores like WalMart

2. don't require much labor to make because our manufacturing sector is so productive

Well, they are on an American record label. The song may very well be “made” (recorded) in America. In any case, it’s not like there’s an American Rush they could have used. Music isn’t like T-shirts.

Yep. I love Walmart. It’s not like all the other big box stores don’t sell Chinese products too. But the left hates Walmart and has been propagandizing against it for decades now. Never hear them complaining about Costco for doing the same, because they’re unionized. Nor will you ever hear about the billions in cash and merchandise that Walmart donates to local food banks and other charities.

After Donna Halper gave 'Working Man' a spin on WMMS, Rush's career took off

[ This has nothing to do with economic nationalism.

Wages are rising in China plus fuel prices are rising as well.

American manufacturing is increasingly competitive with Chinese exports.

A larger and larger percentage of goods will be manufactured within NAFTA taking market share from China and other Asian countries. Much of it will have enough American content to be labeled “Made in USA or Assembled in the USA.” ]

Until they start pumping out more cheaply made goods from other commie countries like Veitnam and Cambodia and Indonesia....

Even India...

There are a LOT of third world countries that can make cheap crap even if China prices itself out of OUR markets...

There have always been dirt cheap labor. In Africa for example.

But they need the whole enchilada to make it work.

Good roads, railways, ports, reliable cheap electricity. Etc

India’s manufacturing base is a joke because the power grid is off half the time for manufacturing.

Indonesia is the opposite of a commie country.

They are Muzzies that kill Commies dead.

A lot of dead Commies, particularly in the 60’s and 70’s.

North American manufacturing will be increasingly competitive for the next 20 years. After that only a fortune teller would know.

Don’t really care about European or other markets.

You may wish to look at post #9 in this topic for a very good suggestion!

If he were still alive he’d have a new song “Can I have that job back now?”

I’d suggest you stop looking at the trees and focus on the forest.

"The Trees" RUSH

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

Merle Haggard - Workin’ Man Blues

Hey hey, the working man, the working man like me I ain't never been on welfare, that's one place I won't be

Cause I'll be working long as my two hands are fit to use

I drink a little beer in a tavern Sing a little bit of these working man blues

Yeah drink a little beer in a tavern,

Cry a little bit of these working man blues

Canada is also, if you haven’t consulted a map, in America.

Canada is most definitely not in what is colloquially referred to as 'America' with that slang name being shorthand for the United States of America. The Canadians I know would take deep umbrage at your defacto annexation of their country. Myself, I'm just offended to see liberal 'logic' being bandied about on FR without the requisite sarcasm tags.

Agreed. See post #9 for an outstanding suggestion that Wal Mart could’ve used.

I agree to an extent. Walmart is part of the symptom of the real problem, and that is the unfair trade relationship we have with China. We have gutted our manufacturing ability to the Chi Coms.
