SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. No good deed goes unpunished, and police said a Brookhaven man learned that the hard way Thursday morning while trying to help a car crash victim.
Gustavo Carmona told Channel 2s Mike Petchenik he was driving south on Ga. 400 at the Chattahoochee River in Sandy Springs when he saw a BMW lose control and crash into the median wall.
I thought he needed help, you know? Carmona said. I just stopped a little bit and asked, Are you OK?
Carmona said he was shocked when the driver got out of the wrecked car, pointed a gun at his head and demanded his van.

Thanks, I have posted it in my FB page, so that my friends are aware of it.
This will end up costing lives. Over the years, I’ve stopped and given assistance at several wrecks. I know that is fairly stupid with lawyers on the prowl. In conjunction with my employment, I’ve both taken and taught first aid. Don’t do any harm is a directive and I stop out of that concern as well as a desire to help.
Over Christmas, I came across a woman who had just been thrown out of a moving car by her husband as it termed out. All I did was keep people from moving her as she had initially landed on her head. She was incoherent with eyes dilated and unfocused. I reassured her and kept her quiet as the other people were blocking the road in both directions. I talked very briefly with the first responders when they arrived and then I left. I later learned the husband was arrested for assault.
My daughter and neighbors were shocked that I stopped. Their first concern was that the husband would be coming after me as one neighbor knows him and is frankly afraid of him. My daughter says, “She’s going to sue you.” As this guy in FL found out, life is more complicated than it used to be.
John Derbyshire, please pick up the courtesy phone!
Yep. I occasionally pick up hitchhikers if I think they need it. Picked up two young girls at sunset, because they were walking down an unlighted road - prime candidates for being flattened.
My friends (and later my wife) told me I took a terrible chance. One false accusation...
But you have to do what is RIGHT. That is why we’re not Liberals.
Yes, I’ll continue stopping, difficult as it is, unless plenty of help is already there.
If I see an accident, I drive away. I don't get involved. It's none of my business.
Just get a hidden camera or at least audio to CYA.
Had Carmona had proper situational awareness....he could have scored the dude’s pistol, plus all the weaps and ammo in the car...and what sounds like a brand new machete. And of course taken out a scumbag. :->
God made us smart to help the stupid. He made us strong to help the weak. He keeps us safe to protect those in peril.
He gives us the opportunity to do His will or our own. That is the test and measure of a man.
I always just ask myself what would Jesus do and how would John Wayne go about doing it.
Good idea. Thanks.
