A Good Samaritan stopped and helped an injured dog that somehow ended up in the HOV lane of the Eastex Freeway early Friday.

The dog was spotted in the outbound HOV lane near Tidwell shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Animal Control officers were called to the scene, however it was a Good Samaritan who was able to get there first.

Rickey Young, a father and contractor, said he heard about the problem on the radio and wanted to do something to help.

“I’m just kind of a softy on that stuff,” he said. “I have a dog and would hate to see him on a highway like that.”

As it turns out, the yellow lab mix was badly hurt. Young took her to safety.

TranStar cameras captured the whole thing, including the skittish dog at first trying to back away. Yet Young was able to entice her with his sandwich, and soon the yellow lab was in his truck.

It is all very heartwarming, etc...

But, seriesly, folks, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, keep on driving. All it takes is one idiot on a cellphone or updating his iTunes playlist, and this is a story about a husband and father killed while out on the highway.

This father has a duty to come home alive. It would have been small solace for his son to hear at his funeral that the dog was OK.

Thank God the first comment is saying what I am thinking.

How many times does the phrase “Let no good deed go unpunished” need to be said? Obviously, not enough.

I suppose I have officially arrived at Oldmanhood.

when jumping into any emergency situation, the first thing you have to do is assess accident scene safety. always. I know of too many cases where would be rescuers with good hearts and good intentions were struck and killed by oncoming traffic while attempting to render aid. Accidents occurring on the blind sides of hills are notorious for this. That being said, I’m glad the the guy saved the animal and he’s the hero of the day as far as I’m concerned.

I understand what you are saying but without some risk there is no heroism.

I rescued my dog on last Dec27 from the median of a divided US highway at one end of a causeway. She was eating road kill. Made my daughter turn around to go back and get her. Before we could get back she got clipped on the tail by a car.
The vet thinks she might be a black lab/pit bull mix. She is smart, sweet, affectionate without being clingy, and has a strong desire to please.
I will be 60 yo in 3 weeks and had never had a dog. I wasnt looking for a dog and had no thoughts og getting one. All I can say is that God put us together at this time. She is absolutely wonderful and if I had been looking for a dog, there is no way I could have picked out such a great one.
Isn’t life funny sometimes?

“I wasn’t looking for a dog and had no thoughts on getting one”.

Well.. it can happen that way! Years ago, I found a dying, emaciated puppy in a graveyard. Like you.. I wasn’t looking for a dog either. Sounds to me like you found a good buddy for you! She will probably be like many of the rescues that truly appreciate the kindness you have offered. Win Win situation! She gets a great home and you have a running buddy. Early Happy Birthday!

What a touching story...divine order...The two of you were meant for each other. That’s what love is about, being there for each other and sharing life.
I am so happy for both of you.

I’ve known a number of pit-labs...they’re great dogs! The sole flaw is a tendency to beat your shins black and blue from wagging. :-)

She doesn’t wag just her tail. Its the entire back end. And she will beat you to death with it.

We all love dogs but the only safe way to deal with one running loose on the freeway is to run it over with a CHP car.

For those of you not familiar with Houston’s freeway system, the HOV lanes are usually separated from the 4-5- or 6 lane freeways. They will be one lane and a side area where you can pull over if you have a problem.

Even so, it was brave and daring of this kind man to rescue this dog. Good for you fella.

I am 240lb man that cuts wood, chews tobacco, drinks beer, wears boots, shoots-rebuilds-restores all types firearms, hunts, fishes.... needless to say... a world apart from a touchy feely girly sissy man.

But this type thing tears my heart apart.
I have one soft spot.
ONE.

And this is it.
