YORK COUNTY, SC — Alice Renee McGlone says her cats Rhett Butler and Tara will have to go on without Scarlett –– her 9-year-old Labrador retriever –– after a York County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed the dog when, he says, it charged him aggressively on Tuesday.
McGlone’s friend Ron Montana buried Scarlett on Wednesday afternoon in her backyard, under a tree, on Clara Street in Rock Hill. Montana and McGlone say they’re outraged that the deputy used lethal force.
But, sheriff’s officials say the deputy had no choice but to protect himself from the dog.
“He hated to have done what he did but we teach our officers that they need to protect themselves in all situations,” said Capt. Allen Brandon. “It’s regrettable what happened.”

The *ONLY* thing that matters with these people is : that they get to go home to their families at night. Period. Don’t forget that.

Dogs obviously are easier to domesticate than some humans.
Exactly. How come everyone else manages to go about their business without shooting dogs every time one barks? At 12 I was a paperboy in Alaska where quite a few people kept dogs large enough and aggressive enough to scare the bears away from getting in their trash cans. I was challenged by dogs daily but I never had to shoot one and I never got bit. I did have to smack down a couple dogs on a regular basis. Cops should learn how to read the dog's body language and have other options than just shooting. I did at 12 years old.
Have cops quit carrying pepper spray?
Would it not make sense when entering a backyard for a welfare checks etc., to take a taser along for safety, just in case a pet was in the back yard and to avoid shooting rounds off in a neighborhood?

We talked to a guy who went door to door delivering mail for nearly 30 years...He never once had to shoot a dog to death, but did use his pepper spray one time.

“Beware of Dog” Like that is really going to stop a cop with an etch to pull the trigger on something... It’s more of an invitation.
I predict the body cam program will be an outlandish success. Eventually, the cops themselves will like having them because of all the garbage they put up with will be documented.
I think it should be standard procedure for any cop who’s dealing with any situation to have his taser out & ready. This nonsense of not having enough time is horse crap. He had enough time to draw a lethal weapon, then he had enough time to draw a nonlethal weapon or should have had it drawn already.

I take it the cop is too stupid to realize the length of leashes limits how far a dog can “lunge.”

The cop looks terrified to be holding that.
The problem isn’t stupidity, but sociopathy.
He shot the dog because he wanted to shoot the dog.
Does this Keystone Kop ever chase real criminals? If so, does he rely on them making their presence and location clear in advance, since he's too inept to survey the scene before going in?

Should be standard procedure. You might startle some sunbathing mama but you won’t kill nobody.
