(KMOV.com) — A new prescription painkiller has ER doctors concerned about the risk of spikes in overdoses and deaths.

Zohydro is 10 times stronger than Vicodin and could be potentially deadly. The potent extended release prescription painkiller is made of pure hydrocodone.

Doctors fear it’ll fall into the wrong hands when it’s released later this month.

That means it will be injectable, if there is no tylenol in the compound. So, yes, there will be ODs.

Bring it on baby ! After six years of Obama, Zohydro could well be the answer to our problems.

When I have had kidney stone attacks nothing they have given me seems to do any good at all. I suspect they are too conservative with pain killers when a person is really suffering.

When I had my first attacks in my early 20s, the doctors were surprised that morphine did nothing. There was one called toridal(sp?) that worked great.

I worked in a big city ER for 20 years.Heroin ODs were a dime a dozen...Narcan,an opiate antagonist, was ordered by the crate.Ten bucks says that within a few years this new drug will be withdrawn from the market due to lawsuits and, perhaps, bad publicity as well.

Since they just killed my Vicodin prescription due to the high acetophetimin content, this will be a welcome relief.

(CDC info)

The unprecedented rise in overdose deaths in the US parallels a 300% increase since 1999 in the sale of strong opioid painkillers. These drugs were involved in 14,800 overdose deaths in 2008, more than cocaine and heroin combined.

The misuse and abuse of prescription painkillers was responsible for more than 475,000 emergency department visits in 2009, a number that nearly doubled in just five years.

More than 12 million people reported using prescription painkillers nonmedically in 2010, that is, using them without a prescription or for the feeling they cause.

The quantity of prescription painkillers sold to pharmacies, hospitals, and doctors’ offices was 4 times larger in 2010 than in 1999. Enough prescription painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every American adult around-the-clock for one month.

So what. The acetaminophen in Vicodin has been responsible for deaths from liver failure. If you need an opioid, take an opioid and don’t adulterate it with a liver toxin.

Don’t be ridiculous. The amount of acetaminophen is so negligible it’s insane to worry about it. Liver failure my a$$. People have been taking acetaminophen for thirty years and more without incident.

I’m not to worried, have suffered from migraines for thirty plus years, thrashed back and bone on bone right knee, I was on the evil addictive vicodin for twenty eight years and rather than addicting me all that happened was it became ineffective i would have to take so much for it to anything it made my skin crawl.

More than 4 grams per day of acetaminophen can cause liver damage. Or so they say.

The pills I presently have for a broken heel bone contain 350 mg acetaminophen and call for one or two tablets every 4 to 6 hours.

That’s obviously very close to a toxic level.
