I taught two of my horses to “bow” and one of them to fake being a ‘gaited’ horse.
It drove my dad crazy because he’d take the ‘gaited’ one out to show off to his buddies and the horse wouldn’t perform for him.
They also knew how to “nod yes and no” when asked questions.

That's pretty good. They can be like big dogs, intelligence-wise, and not without individual personality, including mental strengths, weakness, preferences, etc.
There was a famous horse years ago, who was said to be able to do mathematical calculations. As it turned out later, by best explanations for (or around?) the idea of the horse in actuality being able to add, subtract, and I think do simple multiplication and division, it was determined that the horse was just so keyed into visual clues, possibly including facial expression, along with body-language of humans which would tip him off to keep stomping with one of his hooves until he arrived at the right number.
It's said that some warhorses would get excited at the sound of gunfire...and want to go to it, and fight. For horses know when they can intimidate, some enjoy it.
I knew of a gelding who after having been put into the same pasture with a few mares (and getting his regularly kicked) that once he figured out that he (along with a rider) could pick on bovines, just loved it. Ok,ok, ok, hurry up with that saddle, let's GO. lol.
Many years ago, there was a very famous Krautisch horse who could do sums ...
His owner would ask him, "Hans, what is three plus four"? And Hans would clop his hoof, once, twice ... while carefully watching his owner ... six, seven, and stop! Hans having observed his owner's eyebrow moving ever so little.
Of course, if Hans couldn't see his owner's face, his accuracy tanked.
Clever Hans was known the world over, LOL!

Some cowboy has the new horse genius but I’ve forgotten his name.
I pretty much treated the horse like giant dogs and they responded in kind.
This was not always a good thing since my mom would flip out if they followed me not only up on the back porch but into the kitchen, as well.
[that one was just a Shetland..it’s not like she took up much space] :)
Rebel, the horse of my youth, was a wonderment.
He would do anything I asked of him and excelled as a trail horse.
Totally bullet proof.
Dad would take him out to go with his riding friends and Reb would act like a complete maniac.
Dad was wrapped too tight and it made Reb nervous.
He would ride him in full “riot gear” [harsh bits, etc] and I just looped a lead through his halter and went all over the mountains with no problem.
They know.
I miss my horses.
They all had good long lives but unfortunately, not as long as mine has been.
I used to “cut” my gramma’s herd of dairy cows.
Boy, did she ever get mad.

Apparently, on this thread, dogs have no free will!
That said, my parents had a German Shepherd named Kessie...now, that dog liked ice cream, and who could blame it.
But one day, my dad and I had been talking in the kitchen, and went back on the porch where he had left his cup of coffee, and Kessie had her long, pointy, snout in the mug, lustilly lapping the brown liquid!
My dad stared in amazement. then looked at me with a big grin and said
“She’s a Kaffeehund!”
He wondered why he was going through coffee so fast!
Are you familiar with the phrase “slop the hogs”?
When making moonshine the tank used to ferment the corn before the liquid is distilled is called the slop tank.
After the corn has fermented and all the liquid squeezed out(corn squeezins) what was left was the slop they would feed to the hogs so nothing would go to waste.
Dogs are pack animals.
