Mariska Hargitay Helped Catch Real-Life Rapist
New York Magazine ^ | 3/11 | Kat Stoeffel

Posted on 03/11/2014 2:22:13 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Part of what makes sex-crimes police procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit bearable is that it’s a fantasy. Not the sex crimes part. The swiftness and proficiency with which Detective Olivia Benson catches rapists (44 minutes) is soothing to watch because, in real life, only 3 percent of rapists ever see jail time, according to RAINN. So it’s nice to know that SVU star Mariska Hargitay is not just profiting off ripped-from-the-headlines wish fulfillment. She's also working to close the gap between the reality and Law & Order.

In addition to her documentary about untested rape kits, Hargitay has an organization, Joyful Heart Foundation, helping to raise the $14 million necessary to process Detroit’s backlog of 11,000 rape kits. Hargitay was on hand for a press conference in Detroit today after a judge sent one of the 100 serial rapists identified by the 2,000 kits tested so far to prison for 45 to 90 years, the Detroit Free Press reports. Hargitay called backlogs “the clearest and most shocking demonstration of how we regard these crimes.” “One would assume that if someone endures a four- to six-hour invasive examination, that that evidence would be handled with care,” she said.

gosh if only someone had a few trillion $$$ for ‘shovel ready’ projects or something...

Maybe they could use them to start a business processing 11,000 backlog kits

I find Hargitay fascinating. I keep studying her face to see a resemblance to her mother. I can't see it yet. BTW, I think Mariska is the prettier one.

I used to like her, until . . . .

PER WIKI: On February 17, 2012, Hargitay made a donation of $35,800 to the Obama Victory Fund, the maximum individual contribution allowed by law.

Check out Jayne in 1962s's Hangover (by Alfred Hitchcock). I think that's the closest resemblance to Mariska that you'll find.

You're right! Put a dark wig on her, and you have Det. Olivia Benson.

So that was Jayne Mansfield without the wigs. The real reincarnation of Jayne was Anna Nicole Smith. As for Jayne’s daughter, Mariska, she is one of those people who doesn’t smile a lot. My impression is, the fact that Mariska seldom smiles does not necessarily mean she isnt happy, that’s just her being herself. This lady grew up surrounded by show and sports figures, so, she is less likely to be impressed of bowled over by anyone.

I like the way the cop shows get DNA evidence processed in a matter of minutes. That’s fast, I tell ya.

Jayne Mansfield’s daughter.
***********************
I have a lot of admiration for Mariska. Daughter of two very well known parents: Jayne and Micky Hargitay.

I think she was only around 5 y/o when riding in the car with her mother. The car went under the rear end of a semi trailer and beheaded Jayne. .......That’s a lot of psychological trauma for a young girl to overcome (to the degree that she has done so).
