Keep it up. I'm 55 myself. I work out 4 times a week at 5:00 AM and there's is a 69 year old there at the gym who works as hard as anyone there. But you are right, it's the joints that give out on you. I have to work around tendonitis in my elbow and sometimes a little knee soreness. I have the heart and muscle of a 29 year old but my joints are every bit of 55. LOL.
.
So, which is it? Do we continue to work our joints to keep them active or do we not work them, so that they last a little longer as we get older?
I agree 100 percent. Deadlifts don’t work your arms (except your forearms, necessary for gripping heavy weight), your delts, your traps, or even your abs except coincidentally. To say that deadlifts are the only exercise you need is absurd.
Ahhhh, the $64,000 question. I still work them but some lifts I just have to use less weight than I am able and some lifts I avoid altogether. Usually I can find a workaround. Dumbbell flys just aggravate my elbows too much to do as do cable crossovers. But there is a fly machine that doesn't hurt the elbows at all. Further, I've found that dips and hand clap push ups work those areas of the chest that I used to use crossovers to hit. I've also discovered that using a neutral grip on a lot of lifts doesn't stress the elbows as much as a regular grip. Walking lunges stress my knees too much to do anymore but stationary lunges on a smith machine don't really bother them at all. For me it's a matter of experimenting and learning what does and doesn't aggravate my joints. That and ice and Ben-gay. (actually instead of Ben Gay I use an ointment call "Maxi-Freeze" - it's really great and I highly recommend it for inflamed joints and muscles. You can find it at most pharmacies.) Finally, I've found that spending 10 minutes warming up before a workout will greatly reduce post-workout soreness in the joints and muscles. I've developed a routine of light stretching and calisthenics. It's essential.
I’ve done 525 lbs before. Form is everything.
Nonsense. Normal people don't pick up heavy things off the ground? Really?
People who do deadlifts or bodyweight back training like bridges or yoga backbend poses tend not to have the back problems everyone else complains about. I think 80% of general population back problems and back complaints can be cured by doing reasonable amounts of these exercises, but people always have an excuse or reason not to do them.
preparation is the key! :-)
I appreciate everyone's encouraging advice on this thread! Have a safe and blessed weekend!
Yes, I am finding that out. I do need to take my warm-ups a little more seriously, as I’m not 20 anymore. Have a great weekend!
Me neither LOL!
In fact, the guys at my church freak out when i pick up my bass cabinet and carry it to my car. (I am a 60+ year old widow). They all come running to help...but by then, the cabinet is already in the car.
You are awesome :-)
I don’t do gyms.
Too many metrosexual phone obsessed yuppies.
You know why I don’t go to the gym? Because I am too tired from WORKING ALL DAY.
RE: Because I am too tired from WORKING ALL DAY.
Is it a desk job?
Also will get you run over by people that want to go home.
Yep, work like a man.
“”Is it a desk job?””
The fact that I am writing this and have not blown my brains out would constitute a big NO.
You can get a lot of this done at work. I used to lift a lot of 540MB hard drives. Over the years I’ve gradually worked that up to 4 TB drives. Multiple reps.
