Personally, I like Win7. I find it simple and easy to use. Windows 8? Not so much
I didn’t install the patch that causes the popup.
‘Buy a Mac’. First, I don’t need a 2nd mortgage on the house. :<(((( Second, the programs I’ve written to record all prime time TV on my video cards would be useless. Are there any video cards that plug into the Mac?????????????
Lastly, I’ve only been on XP for the last 3 or 4 years. Stayed on 98 for ever and ever. I’ve had to use a W7 machine now and then. My measure of useability is Explorer. Without a major investment of relearning Explorer I can’t get any useful information in less than 10 minutes of clicking around. I finally gave up and install FreeAgent on those W7 machines that I have to use. If I have to do a major relearn on Explorer I assume the same must be for W7 in general. But of course I know its not that bad but it is really upsetting when the new release of Windows this or that ~!@#@#%$&$^&*%^*&*$%^@%$^$. Why in the h___ change the user interface to one of the most fundamental programs
????????
Its XP for the next year or two at the least.........
I work with a lot of banks and almost ALL of the ATM's are still on XP.
The paid support will be minimal, and increase in cost.
“As part of Custom Support — which according to analysts, costs about $200 per PC for the first year and more each succeeding year — participants receive patches for vulnerabilities rated “critical” by Microsoft. Bugs ranked as “important,” the next step down in Microsoft’s four-level threat scoring system, are not automatically patched. Instead, Custom Support contract holders must pay extra for those. Flaws pegged as “moderate” or “low” are not patched at all.”
My office 2003 ran on 8·1
I thought I read almost every banks ATM runs on XP...
thats gonna leave a mark
Linux is free
Here are some links for “hardening” XP and minimizing your risk, until you can replace your computer.

Windows 7 is just fine. Can’t believe anyone would still want to use XP.
So on an XP machine, should automatic updates be on or off?
(with AU on) The conspiracy theorist in me thinks MS will keep making XP slower and more bloated to get you to upgrade.
Windows 8.1 is actually a better version of Windows 7, and you can pretty much run it like Windows 7 with a better Programs sub-menu once you get the feel of it. There are significant performance improvements over Win7 in 8.1
You get what you pay for.
No thanks, I’m straight.
oh
After the updates end, then stopping automatic updates is sealing another small risk point.
The windows security program will continue updating for another year, but those links mention better security programs, plus you can manually update you essentials every couple of weeks.
We use it for Coding systems at Work. No malware/viruses to speak of and it works fine.
If all you do is browser, email and Office stuff, you are safer with Linux. If you are coding Java/Groovy/Grails type stuff, you are better off with Linux.
Windows is a very baggy system.
I moved from XP to Ubuntu on my laptop about 3 months ago.
I like it. Faster than XP. Will run a Chrome browser on dial up connection speeds.
And it is free
But I like XP.
