Hal Douglas dead at 89: Voiceover artist dies of pancreatic cancer

Hal Douglas, the voice behind scores of movie trailers and television commercials, died Thursday.

The Connecticut-born voice actor died in his home in Lovettsville, Va., of complications from pancreatic cancer — his daughter, Sarah Douglas, confirmed to TMZ.

Douglas was 89 years old.

The voice artist enjoyed a career spanning over several decades, lending his voice to trailers and roles in movies like "Forrest Gump," "Lethal Weapon," and "The Holiday."

“I’m not outstanding in any way,” he told The New York Times in 2009.

“It’s a craft that you learn, like making a good pair of shoes. And I just consider myself a good shoemaker.”

In Jerry Seinfeld's 2002 documentary "The Comedian," Douglas even parodies himself as a cliché movie-trailer announcer.

His success can be likened to that of Don LaFontaine, one of the most iconic voiceover artists, who passed away in 2008.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Ruth, daughter and two sons from a previous marriage.

I am most familiar with him introducing the All new Tuesday on the WB. An All new Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed by a new Dawson’s Creek.

Here's some audio outtakes from Orson Welles who was recording a VO for frozen peas. Very funny stuff.

Tim Conway Jr told a story about him last night on his radio show. They were golfing so we here, and Hal was wearing crazy golf pants, with stripes and plaid on the same pants. Another golfer said “crazy pants, dude” or something, and Hal, in his inimitable trailer voice, said “They cover my nuts!”

Lol. RIP.

Peggy, sorry about your mom.

Couple of thoughts.

The rate does go up with age, but pancreatic cancer is 12th on the list of types of cancer. BUT results in a high number of cancer deaths.

Thanks. Most folks I’ve known have been in the 45 to 65 year old range, with a zero survival rate, pretty much the opposite of prostate cancer.

Same here. Decided to look it up. It is a horrible disease, another example of how much the fall has impacted us all.
