Word For The Day, Monday, March 14, 2014 – blarney

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

blarney; noun noun 1. flattering or wheedling talk; cajolery. 2. deceptive or misleading talk; nonsense; hooey: a lot of blarney about why he was broke. verb (used with object), verb (used without object), blar·neyed, blar·ney·ing. 3. to flatter or wheedle; use blarney: He blarneys his boss with the most shameless compliments. Origin: 1760–70; after the hamlet Blarney, in Ireland; see Blarney stone 1796 (which is said to make a persuasive flatterer of any who kiss it), in a castle near Cork, Ireland; reached wide currency through Lady Blarny, the smooth-talking flatterer in Goldsmith's "Vicar of Wakefield" (1766).

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

it is totally ludicrous how much snow we have gotten this winter! xsboy was home for a few days at the end of his spring break, he had a 10 am flight from DCA this AM to Syracuse, which we were betting on being canceled [and indeed it was, Reagan airport got 7.2 inches] so xshub drove him up yesterday late afternoon. They had a great time in the truck on the way up, xshub helped him brainstorm a paper he has to do. He had his laptop and ipad and xshub had his “my-fi” [which i guess creates a hotspot wherever you are] and so after he did some research for the paper they were able to watch the PAIRINGs on xsboy’s laptop. They had siriusXM radio analysis, they had ESPN on the laptop and were just happy as clams and the 6 hours just flew by.

Easy to figure out. If Carney says he’s leaving, it means that he’s staying. And vice-versa.

I just don’t get the appeal of watching people unveil brackets. Let me know when they are out and I will look at them.

BTW, after getting screwed by non-foul call on Saturday, Pitt gets screwed by committee with 9 seed playing #1 Florida if they make second round.

Actually, no. It was the first thing that came to my (alleged) mind. You'll notice that I responded to post #1 or #2, as opposed to my usual practise of responding to a post further down.

It could also have been "Barney Miller's (or Barney Rubble's) Irish cousin...

xshub lives and breathes college basketball, he knows recruits who are still in Jr high and which teams are pursuing them. he has encyclopedic knowledge of teams and has forever followed it. he and xsboy like to size up the match-ups in the various regions etc. taking into account the home-court advantages etc. technology has made the unveiling somewhat anti-climatic. When we were dating and in law school his power was out up in Syracuse and so i held the phone up to my tv in VA so he could hear the pairings. it involved yellow legal pads full of machinations back in those days. Yes, Pitt was screwed by homer ACC officials on Sat. Very unfair.

I skipped the B stone and shopped till I dropped.

As it turned out, those were the last items I purchased in Ireland because we did not know if we were going to be able to get home and we need to conserve our funds just in case. As you remember, all flights were cancelled. We did get out the following Saturday, but ours was the only plane that got out of Shannon to the US that day. We left 1000s of people on the ground whose earlier flights had been cancelled.

Everybody in Ireland was quite wonderful to us all week. They recognized us as Americans and offered condolences everywhere we went. On Friday that week, the Irish government decred it a “Day of Mourning” and closed everything except the churches. Even the pubs were closed. They only way we got fed was because we had hotel reservations. Anybody who was staying in a hotel was out of luck.

We attended Mass in Galway (because our scheduled tour had been cancelled) where the President of Ireland led the procession. The Offertory gift was a First Aid kit that was going to the NYFD. Only the Chemist shoppes were open for people to fill their prescriptions. Mass was filled to overflowing, and they served Communion in the parking lot for people who couldn’t get in.

The Cathedral was quite lovely — all stone mosaic done with different colors of granite from every district of Ireland. No stained glass. All of the pictures were mosaic. I have to comment that Mass in Gaelic was quite an experience. I couldn’t understand a single word! I don’t even know when they said the Our Father.

Our tour guide grumbled because Mass lasted more than an our because of the crowds and the tour buses. According to him, no self respecting Irishman will sit still for more than a half hour for Mass! LOL.

My daughter in upstate NY finally broke down a purchased a new snow blower. Hers has been broken all winter (and resisting repair) and the shoveling has been left to her.

I don’t know where you would even find one this time of year. It’s all grass seed and lawn mowers at the home improvement stores.

No blarney, this song was my daughter's favorite during Irish Dance classes. It's very catchy.

I didn’t buy soda bread but made white bread and added sunflower seeds and dried cranberries - it was really good! But I do have a corned beef in the crock pot!
