My older brother had a debriefed/Retired German Shepard k9, and got into a relationship with a woman who had a huge cat (20+ lbs). The animals hated each other with a passion, and the tension was always high. He was forced to "referee" because of his girl friend. However, she was out one night and he decided to let them "work out their differences", so locked them both in the bathroom. The negotiations turned out to be quite a long, drawn-out affair. However it ended up being a stalemate, with the cat behind the toilet, raking the dogs face every time he tried to get to it. From what I understand, mutual respect reigned from that day forth, and they stayed out of each others way (pretty much).
Same was not the case for my brother & his girlfriend though, and they ended up staying out of each others way permanently not much later...
