Yes, I see that you see it as a type of esteem or admiration.

I do not. My definition is more akin to common courtesy and consideration. Just because I’m polite and respectful doesn’t mean I admire someone or approve of their behavior.

I think of that shooting over texting at a movie. Both of those men didn’t respect the other (hadn’t earned respect as you seem to think is required) and nothing but grief came from that basic lack of respect or courtesy toward others.

In that case I believe the more appropriate word is “tolerant” not “respect”.
