Can you name one person currently serving in the United States Senate?

That's what more than a dozen students on the American University campus ― in the nation's capital, no less ― were recently asked by the conservative Media Research Center.

Just one did. The rest struggled mightily.

Given my rants about parents not making sure that their children are being taught the federal government's constitutionally limited powers, this issue doesn't really surprise me. In fact, I wish that I was wrong.

With all due respect to our great, great grandparents, this situation is evidence that they were duped by the Progressive Movement to pressure state lawmakers to ratify the ill-conceived 17th Amendment.

Not to mention the one lowering the voting age.

This is why we need term limits.

Ambush journalism. This is an old trick to make people appear to be ignorant. Run up to them, shove a microphone in their face, and ask an unexpected question while impatiently demanding a response.

If you give them even a few seconds to think of an answer, often they can; but that is not what you want. You want them to fail and look foolish.

They didn’t seem ambushed by the Frozen song.

So the MSM ask Sarah Palin who the president of Uzbekistan is, and ask Bush to name the chief export of Rwanda. That is NOT the same as asking students to name ONE U.S. Senator.

What difference does it make. We’re entering the age of a de facto dictatorship anyway. The Senate will soon have all the authority of the old Roman Senate; which is to say none.

Isn’t it common knowledge who your Senators are?

If questioned ambush style, I could name both of my US Senators, my congressman, and state legislators.

If such basic knowledge of our government isn’t common knowledge, it should be.

NY's Chucky Schumer is probably deeply disappointed ... He figures all that face-time on camera he commandeers should be worth something ...

Yep. Its purpose is to rubberstamp whatever Obama wants.

Still, there is Article V. Through our states, we have the peaceful means to do that which Romans did not.

I know who the ones here are (refuse to say "mine") but as they are absolutely useless and opposed to all I believe in, they effectively are not my Senators. They certainly do not care what I think.

The EBT crownd and the socialists, now they are well represented.

When I was in high school, both U.S. senators from my state of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson and William Proxmire, spoke at my school. National politics was discussed in our current events class. Political philosophy was discussed. So most kids could at least name their own state’s senators and local congressman(woman). How many teens/young adults can do that today?

I agree that this is bogus journo-lism. 90% of the population are not political junkies like Freepers. I would bet that 90% of Freepers couldn’t name their Senators when they were in college or the military. It just wasn’t relevant.

I also would like to see the voting age raised to something like 28 or so because of the general dislike or apathy towards politics at younger ages.

Of course, I’d like to see other limits on voting also, i.e. only land/homeowners.
