Word For The Day, Monday, 3/31/14

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

rapacious; adj.

1. given to seizing for plunder or the satisfaction of greed. 2. inordinately greedy; predatory; extortionate: a rapacious disposition. 3. (of animals) subsisting by the capture of living prey; predacious. Synonyms ravenous, voracious, grasping; preying. "Fortunately for those who pay their court through such foibles, a fond mother, though, in pursuit of praise for her children, the most rapacious of human beings, is likewise the most credulous; her demands are exorbitant; but she will swallow any thing." Jane Austen.

Etymology: 1645–55; < Latin rapāci- (stem of rapāx greedy, akin to rapere to seize; see rape1 ) + -ous

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

No, we hatched the chick in an incubator in the house. We did bring the mother in to show her, but don’t know if she knows what’s what.

Paula and i met two other former Gonzaga hockey moms for lunch on Sat. It was rainy, and we were meeting on Capital Hill which is a pain in the behind as far as parking goes. i whined a bit seeing if xshub would volunteer to take and pick me up, but he had something to do and couldn’t. so anyway, i sucked it up and went. it was a TURKISH restaurant, called Cafe 8. Denice, the mom that organized the lunch, is a reg, knows the owners and the staff, and they came out to meet us, etc. One of the other moms lived in Turkey for a few years growing up, bc her dad was foreign service, so she is drooling over this menu. Paula and i talked before going and i said Paula, it says TURKISH on Yelp! she said there’s a spinach feta omelette on the brunch menu, i said oh ok, good. So we get there and the waiter says oh btw, we are not offering the brunch menu today. oh greeeeaaat. i ordered shrimp, figuring it’s something i know i like. the two turkish food fans ordered DONER kabobs. still not sure what DONER is, but it sounds like DONOR and that just doesn’t sound appetizing to me. Denice offered me a taste and it tasted good, but i just couldn’t see ordering something totally foreign when it could potentially be revolting. Anyway, i feel incredibly hep for having eaten there, the food was good. i can’t say i’d rush to go back, but i feel culturally enriched : )

Well, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. What with all the science and nifty incubating gadgets it seems kind of primitive to have a bird sit around on an egg. And they lay eggs all the time. They rarely are in the mood to sit on them, so I don’t even know if she would have.

And it’s been cold enough the last three weeks or so that I doubt one would have been viable anyway had she sat on it.

well there was stuff clearly listed as lamb. i haven’t had lamb in probably 45 years or so? My grandmother was the only one who would cook it. my mother didn’t like it and therefore never made it. i remember liking it ok, but have no recollection of how it tastes.

i guess you are right. she doesn’t necessarily feel they are her children, i guess. just something she produces that you guys collect.

Yes, if none are broody, I would have done it that way too. Easier on the hens. Now you can watch her teach them how to eat and gather them up under her each night to sleep. Those are fun parts.

You are more food adventurous than me. I would have sipped my water and grabbed a nutrigrain bar from my purse on the way home. Are their kids all doing well? All of them still playing hockey somewhere?

Nick is at the U of Delaware, not playing, but he is in a program to be an athletic trainer and has an internship with the Flyers fall semester for that. He and his dad are huge Flyers fans. Marquis, i forget where he is, but he does play hockey in their club program, whichever school he is in. They are both juniors.

its the alma mater of xsfiance’s dad. he was a LAX stud there back in the day and one of his records still stands and so there’s a plaque with his name on it in their clubhouse somewhere.

I hope the Flyers treat him better than the Rangers treated our friend’s son. After using him to set up their youth hockey program and making it into something amazing, they couldn’t find him a paying job in the organization.

That is a shame, but at least he has some great experience to put on his resume, for having done that.
