Rob Scott, the Crane Lake, Minn., angler who caught a potential tip-up world-record lake trout in February, pleaded guilty Friday in Fort Frances Provincial Offences Court to keeping one lake trout over his limit.
Scott, 65, won't get to keep the fish.
He paid a $400 fine plus court costs amounting to about $75, according to Kevin Elliott, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources enforcement supervisor in Fort Frances.
Scott, who was represented by an Ontario attorney, did not contest the charges. He caught and kept the fish that unofficially weighed 52 pounds, 3 ounces, on Feb. 8 while fishing on the Ontario side of Lac La Croix, a border lake northeast of Crane Lake. The fish was 45 inches long with a 32-inch girth, Scott said.
But because Scott's lake trout limit was one fish and he had already kept a 4-pounder earlier in the day, he was over his limit when he kept the big lake trout. He later gave the 4-pound trout to his nephew, he said, but according to Ontario law, he had possessed both fish.
"He killed two fish. You're only allowed to kill one," the MNR's Elliott said.

Crane Lake is pretty.
They really are strict about their limits up there, that’s for sure. Had OPP land their plane only a few yards from our boat and count every fish we had, then flew back to the cabin to count all of them in the live well and coolers as well to make sure. No messing around with excuses, you are either fully guilty or completely innocent, no middle ground period.

That’s the biggest dammed Trout I’ve ever heard of. Apparently Lake Trout grow to MUCH bigger sizes than their creek dwelling cousins where I’m from. I doubt a Trout from a lake is as tasty though.

We fish Lake Erie every spring summer and fall and when we hook up with the lake trout the smokers come out (very tasty when smoked).
Pound for pound they are fighters and a blast to land in the boat.

Winter flounder limit here- two fish per day, minimum 12 inches. Solution: keep ‘em alive in a bucket and replace the smallest if you catch bigger.
Lake trout in Erie? I don’t remember ever catching or seeing someone catch one 20 years ago when I left Ohio. I would think that they would only exist in the far eastern edge of the lake where water is the deepest and coldest.
I remember fishing the Navesink on party boats out of the Highlands. One year my 10 year old daughter cleaned up with first fish, high hook and heaviest flounder.
The old guys hated it because all the way out my daughter complained that she wanted to go home and to tell the captain to turn the boat around. By the time we were done for the day, she had invitations for play dates with their grand kids, more food then she could shake a stick at and fishing lessons.
Funniest thing, every time she caught a fish you would hear the groans of “it’s the kid, again.”. When it came time for the money to go to the pool winner, captain just walked up to her and handed her 50 bucks.

Yes Lake Erie does have lake trout and I have seen over 20 boated before. This was not on any certain trip but through the course of many years fishing Erie for Smallmouth, Perch and Walleye.

Very tough fish to get in the boat but they are a blast to hook and pound for pound they rank up with big Smallmouth.
