Clovis, while in New Mexico, is more like a west Texas town in temperment. Think Lubbock or Amarillo and with the Texas bible belt type ranchers nearby.

However, you have the growing Cannon AFB just to the west a few miles and the military boys will go out of their way for a stop like this. So you end up with a culture clash not untypical around a miltary town.

That being said, it is a darn nice little town. The air base, however, is a constant dirt storm (dust storm doesn’t do it justice.) Cannon is a contractor nightmare because they threw ten years worth of expansion in over four and they didn’t build the infrastucture in advance. Good place to loose money trying to make some from what I saw on the base itself.

This is Clovis California. Next to Fresno, the home of Free Republic.

My first TDY as an Air Force officer (back in the mid-80s) was to scenic Cannon AFB. Nothing like walking out of your hotel room in the morning to the smell of the nearby stockyards.

Back in those days, Cannon had an F-111 wing, and the assumption was that the base would fold when the Aardvarks were retired. But Senator Pete Domenici always made sure that Cannon stayed open. When the F-111s headed for the boneyard, the base got F-16s. But the master stroke was making Cannon an Air Force Special Operations Command base. Plenty of wide-open skies and nearby ranges. So, folks who wind up flying AC-130s or MC-130s can count on at least one tour in lovely Clovis.
