Inside the abandoned shopping centers that were once a beacon of the American Dream
The Daily Mail ^ | 4/10/14 | JESSICA JERREAT

Posted on 04/10/2014 4:53:39 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

When they were built in the 1970s these two gleaming Ohio malls were symbols of the boom years in the U.S., and their wide walkways were filled with shoppers.

Now the verdant foliage that decorated them has died off and the fountains inside are dry as store after store deserted the out-of-town malls.

At deadmalls.com, there are references to the racial issues of both of these malls. At any of the malls within a 40-mile or so radius of me, it comes down to racial demographics.

I don’t see how any retail place can survive right now in a mall. Not only does the ‘real’ economy suck, but they can’t possibly compete with online competitors. Their merchandise would already be a higher price than online, and that’s even before they have the high rent to pay, various taxes, and overhead. Just a sad situation really.

Their business models HAVE to be centered around ignorant customers that aren’t aware of the lower online prices. As a shopper, there really isn’t a reason to physically go to these places. The only time I do is if there’s an unusual situation where I may want to LOOK at something in person, before buying it online. In that case, they’re nothing more than a showroom really.

You just know that things aren’t going well when you see what was space formerly occupied by a big ‘anchor’ retail chain at the mall being rented out to a CHURCH! lol

I think it would be neat if they turned one of the closed down malls into a giant paintball or laser tag place. Perhaps an indoor shooting range with gun shops.

Malls are the section 8 housing of the future.

Large parking lots for the tenants to park their Escalades and Lexus SUVs.

lol!!!

Could turn one of the large empty spaces into a grocery store too! They won’t even have to go outdoors to use their FSA Cards! A smaller spot or two could be beer and ABC stores. Maybe convenience stores too, for junkfood and smokes. Could also open a check cashing place or two. It’ll be a one stop shop for all of your FSA needs! They’ll never even need to leave the place!

Most malls seem to do OK until somebody gets the bright idea to run "public" transportation from the inner city to them so underpriveliged "kids" have something to do and a nice place to go. After all, it's only "fair" and giving them opportunity for a "better" life, right?

After the "teens" finally arrive, it is all down hill from there. What decent person wants to shop or hang around a bunch of ferals who hate you and want to turn your nice shopping experience into "their" turf on their terms and terrorize you in the process?

I am familiar with Randall Park mall. Used to shop there. It died at the hands of bands of menacing thugs who hung out till all hours, stole whatever they could, harassed and threatened the shoppers. When the shoppers no longer felt safe they stopped coming and the mall died on the vine. Many malls are thriving but not in "transitional" neighborhoods.

I work for a tech company. One of our execs recently spoke to us and said that last Christmas online sales were more than 30% of all sales. Apparently that was up a lot even from one year earlier but I was surprised that it was only 30%.

I almost never go to any stores other than the supermarket or the hardware store. I haven't bought a gift at a brick and mortar store in years.

The city of Westminster (Colorado) bought the Westminster mall and then raised it, They had a grand plan to build a low income community center, a light rail hub, and an outdoor mall.

It is still a grass field after the developer abandoned the city two years ago.

There were still businesses and attached major department stores.

The city paid 4 million plus dollars for an open field. Of course, the cost to develop it will be many times that. So I guess I shouldn’t complain. For now anyway.

We have one such mall in the Dayton area, absolutely destroyed by black youth who drove the white shoppers away. Another mall in the area is currently restricting the ours kids can enter without adult supervision. The nicest and newest has limited bus traffic around it’s perimeter.

Both malls became primary haunts of, yes, one particular Cleveland ethnic community. Rolling Acres Mall actually acquired a nickname which I will only quote here in part, “Strolling ... Mall”. I’m sure you can guess the missing word. The time a long frozen body of a parking lot murder victim showed up in a mountainous pile of shoveled snow in the mall’s parking lot was just one of many incidents that somehow put the rest of the community off patronizing the place.

Same thing happened in Toledo, where I was born and raised (now live in Michigan). We had quite a few beautiful malls- I loved going there as a teen, shopping with friends, going to movies. My neighborhood area was Southwyck Mall. All the Malls are now gone, demolished- The demise of the malls and especially Southwyck area (which was an upscale middle class area when I lived there) became ran over with thugs...Toledo is a big Union/Democrat city...like a mini Detroit...so sad to go back to my hometown and see the destruction of a once vibrant city.

Going to Rolling Acres was a treat, and tossing a quarter into the fountain made the experience extra special. By the time I was in middle school people started calling it Strolling Afros. By high school, you just didn’t go there. It actually made me tear up to see those pictures, especially the one of the fountain. obama’s sons and daughters destroyed it,

Certainly not ours. We are assured that the costs were already covered. No mention of bonds or additional debt.

I didn’t help that they killed off possible revenues by closing the mall. The city ran the businesses off after they bought they bought the mall.

The city officials seemed to be very forthcoming and open about the whole thing.

Here is a link to the web site. Wow. I didn’t realize that they want to move downtown Westminster to the site. That is new.

The Dayton Mall is still going strong at last count.

The Salem Mall went down the tubes years ago.

Now a parking lot.

One of the busiest "malls" is the open air outlet center on the way to Xenia.

Always lots of people shopping.

Besides the obvious unstated reason, malls if they are located in the right part of town do alright.

But I have no explanation of why Tri-county (Cincinnati) Mall does well, but the much nicer Forest Fair Mall never quite cut the mustard.

It had much higher end stores, and was only a couple of miles from Tri-county.

My son’s birthday is coming up and I asked him what he wanted. Only thing on his list was 5 lbs. of center cut bacon. Told him I really hadn’t planned to spend that much money on him this year, but that’s what I bought. Stuff at the store or mall is just mostly junk now or poorly made and too expensive to boot.

When malls were built, just like the big box stores, the residential property values fall. Eventually they become high crime areas and business falls off.

The anchor stores were there to support the malls. Eventually they became dependent on the malls. That’s why Penney’s and Sears are in trouble.

Then factor in that these companies offer cheaper prices if you buy online. They’re competing with themselves and losing. ha
