Woman run down by freight train while running on the tracks with headphones on

A California woman was struck and killed Wednesday by a freight train while wearing headphones as she jogged along busy tracks near a popular hiking trail.

Janaki Rose Hayes, 27, of Truckee, was wearing headphones that fully covered her ears and did not hear the blaring horn as the steel beast bared down on her around 1.45 p.m., police said.

Investigators believe she was jogging towards a trail for the bulk of her workout and that the death was an accident, sources told the Sacramento Bee.

Hayes, who had recently moved from Oregon to the small town just north of Lake Tahoe, was just short of the pedestrian bridge when the Union Pacific train caught up to her, cops said.

‘We concluded from our investigation that her intent was to cross the river at some point to access the Legacy Trail for a jog,’ Police Chief Adam McGill in a news release.

She was headed westbound on the rails. The operators slowed the train but could not stop in time to avoid hitting her.

‘It appears the train operators did not contribute to this accident and did all they could to avoid it,’ said McGill.

I’m sorry for her death but this may reflect a certain arrogance that many joggers and bicyclists have in this state. Or she was just plain dumb.

No doubt another fanatical Obama supporter displaying her massive intellect. “Like ohmagawd, like WHUT is a train doing like totally on these train tracks?”

How do you run on train tracks? I run a lot and while they are often nice pathways through town or wilderness, one missed step on a gap between ties while running at a good pace, and you will sprain an ankle or fall on your face.

Death due to stupid. I'm sorry for the family but she did something very stupid. I'm sure there will now be litigation because it was not posted that trains run on train tracks.

In Seattle I bicycle commuted for a couple of decades. The thing that ended it was cell phones. I put it this way: Thanks to cell phones and texting, it’s always Saturday at 2:00 am.

That is a really dangerous time to be on the road on a bicycle.

I knew I’d get hell for that one ;)

No, not all Cali women are stereotypes. I admit it. But you gotta admit that she sure does fir the clueless Valley Girl profile.

the train sire thought so ;)

I heard sirens on the train tracks
Howlin’ naked, gettin’ nuder.
An alter boy’s been hit by a local commuter.
Just from walking with his back turned
to the train that was coming so slow.

Use common sense people. You wouldn’t jog down the middle of a road because cars might come along. So same reason, don’t jog on the tracks, because a train might come along.

She is responsible for her death, but it is still very sad and not something to make light of. I hope people reading this story will be more careful around train tracks.

...

Would it not be a shame if she wasn’t beautiful?

Seriously, I was walking on some railroad tracks in Virginia and was shocked to learn how hard it can be to hear a train when the air and wind conditions are right.

One of the first warnings I got when I began railfanning was that "these @#$%!&s can sneak up on you if you aren't paying attention." How true! An acquaintance of mine was servicing cabooses at a small yard during a light winter snowfall, and a car that had been kicked from the far end rolled past him more quietly than the ambient noise level. Because he was walking outside the rails as he should have been - and was also a skinny lad - he got nothing but a scare out of the event. I had a similar experience a few years later while in the company of a railroad official and it helped to reinforce my respect for the rules.
