As with insider trading, messing with IRS refunds can be quite lucrative, but there is usually a paper trail left behind.

Happy DC emancipation day. A day when my parking garage closes and i have to park another block farther away and pay $5 more [total of $20] for the privilege. Never can remember when it is, so it's always a shock to pull up at 6:30 am to have the garage shut tight.

It snowed on me (lightly) when I filed my taxes yesterday! Grrrr. And I’d gone out without a coat! Brrrr. But it is all gone today.

My 2 1/2 year-old granddaughter has seen The Princess Bride a few dozen times, as her older siblings love the movie. When I prompt her by saying “I am Inigo Montaya,” she responds (with a slight Spanish accent) “You killed my father. Prepare to die!”

Never can remember when it is,

They ought to announce it with, I dunno, an Emancipation Proclamation!

It was strange to behold the grass and cars still covered this morning. It was 80 degrees two days ago. Someone get Al Gore on the courtesy phone.

Mandy Patinkin is doing some sort of concert at the fancy hall in town. Singing, I guess.

I wonder if he does the line at some time during the show.

I mean, he’d have to, right?

So, they close the garage? Why aren’t they open for all the holiday revelers?

Been onboard the BB Texas many times: It started me on my love of engineering and big steam things. (Well, it is impressive for a 7-year old to look at a steam engine, see the top of the open piston and realize “I could stand in that thing and ride up and down all day ...” )

It is an ironic - or iconic? - reflection of the 1890’s - 1912’s dreadnought Navy buildup before WWI that the British were far ahead of all the world’s Navies measured by the 1880-1890-1900 type less-than-dreadnought big ships.

Then they “invented” the Dreadnought - all big gun, very highly armored, very large, long-range fast (for its time) single ship. So, all at once, all of the world’s “old” ships were suddenly obsolete.

including all of the existing big British ships!

OOpsie.

Now, in just one year, all the Germans had to do was launch three dreadnoughts (instead of 20 or 30 big older ships) and the Germans would have caught up with the British and passed them. So, because of the fundamental and massive improvements in the Dreadnought-style battleship, the British made it suddenly possible for the Germans to “win” the very naval buildup they had previously been far, far behind in, and the naval arms race to WWI was accelerated!

Seeing Mandy Patinkin in TV shows like Homeland and Criminal Minds, one may not realize what an incredible, unusual voice he has.

Over the Rainbow.

the garage is mostly used by District employees and there are contract parkers on the one floor. so i guess they figure with them being off, it isn’t worth it. They don’t open on weekends, so it’s not a concern for making $, they are only interested in serving their tenants, i guess.
