Hippo vs. Crocodile: Stunning Photos Show Beastly Showdown in the Wild
New York Daily News ^ | 4/16

Posted on 04/16/2014 4:56:27 PM PDT by nickcarraway

An army of crocodiles took on a herd of massive hippos -- although if you ask us, this fight doesn't seem quite fair. Check out the wild photos from the beastly battle...

It's nature at it's most stunning -- and also it's most brutal. A herd of hippos was no match for this throng of hungry crocodiles that descended upon the unsuspecting beasts at the South Luangwa National Park in Eastern Zambia. See how the drama unfolded...

The article shows nothing, no fight, no resolution.

I bet you'll have the same complaint about my video of Donkey vs. RINO.

From the way I read it, the crocs only got the already dead hippo. (Hippos are pretty bad ass themselves)

Now there's something I wouldn't mind seeing from a safe distance. There's not a magazine with high enough capacity for this vicinity.

The photo series shows a few crocs nosing around an already dead hippo, (”the crocs managed to snag one of the enormous beasts lying dead in the water”) then various other hippo photos. Nothing at all like “the remaining hippos frantically tried to make their escape up stream”.

No kidding? Whenever I see a nature documentary about hippos, they come across as some of the most dangerous, ill-tempered animals in Africa, and perfectly capable of biting a full-grown crocodile in half.

Reminds me of a G Gordon Liddy story of boating up an African river on an errand and stopping to warn some Peace Corp guys who were undressing and about to swim in the river, saying there were crocs in there. The young know-it-alls told Liddy and company to stuff it and the boat moved on. When the boat returned a short time later, there were the clothes still on the river bank but the men were gone....

I don’t think hippos are impressed by crocs at all.

What I see in the photos are crocs surrounding an already dead, mud covered hippo that appear close to being corralled by a line of live hippos who do not seem afraid of the crocs at all. Definite wariness there.

My wife showed me a video of a panther swimming silently up behind a croc on a small island, pouncing on the reptile, biting its neck, and calmly swimming off with the beast in its mouth like a housecat with a dead mouse. One of the most incredible videos I’ve ever seen.

Yeah, anything I have ever seen about them interacting crocs get the heck out of dodge if an adult hippo comes their way, baby hippos excepted.

I always thought Hippos had the upper hand because they were so large. I might disagree with the author’s assessment of the situation.
