Phssst. I’d rather have flavor any day.

What you said about cooking corn.

I sink it in water to get water between the husks, then put the whole thing in the micro and it steams due to the water. I can’t remember how long, either, maybe 6 minutes or so, whenever I see the inside fogged up. I husk it and stick corn holders in the ear, have individual ceramic corn dishes, put pieces of butter in a dish and roll the corn in the butter.

I hope I get corn. If I do, I’ll plant more next year. This year is a wait and see what produces, then do those next year and discard what didn’t work.

One area I don’t know enough about, is, watering. I don’t want to drown them but don’t know exactly how much they need. I’m going to water everything this evening and maybe that will do it until it rains around Friday or Saturday according to my forecast. If it fails to rain, then I’ll do it again.

“Lots of critters come from moths and other flying stuff.”

I’m aware moths are bad creatures that can leave eggs behind and insects/worms develop. I’m on the lookout for such critters but so far there are none. It’s easy for me to check the garden every morning and afternoon since it’s just outside the door past the roofed deck. I’ll just have to wait and see what evil lurks in the garden.

I love corn, I can eat it as is without butter or salt even, but of course butter and salt gives an extra hit to the brain aaaahhhhh.

However, for some reason, I don’t like creamed corn or corn chowder - go figure.

“I don’t like creamed corn or corn chowder - go figure.”

We grew lots of corn in the family garden I hated as a child (hated the garden not the corn). Lots of fresh creamed corn and her canned cream corn in the winter. I had the finest of veggies growing up and thought everyone had those veggies and I thought nothing of it. I remember going to a Sunday dinner at a friend's house when I was around 6 or so, and thought they were strange since there was no hot cornbread on the table - just “light bread” as we called it then.

My body had all the right foods and plenty of it and I didn't appreciate any of it. I kept my head in books and traveled away from there in my books. Someone should have taken me to some place where people didn't have enough food. As far as the starving children in other countries, that wasn't an item in those days. We never heard that. Everyone I knew had plenty of food and the subject never came up.

I did know the adults talked about a “poor farm” where people were but that didn't mean anything to me as no one explained what that was like or how someone got there. I don't know when those went away.

Everyone was concerned that I didn’t eat enough,I ate very slow, and was always underweight as a child. So they were always nagging me to eat.

The thing I heard the most was : There’s starving kids in China that would love to have that.

No rain by us. Just that anemic mist yesterday, and sunshine today.

Wife got her a “new” eye for her birthday; she had her other eye’s cataract removed this morning. It went just like the first one; she was first one in and we were out and in the car driving to Denny’s for breakfast before 7am, and home by 8am.

Thanks. She is seeing clearly already. It’s amazing what they can do sometimes.

Here’s a link to eating some of the veggies that we grow on here. Do you, or do you not like it? That’s the question.

“Here’s a link to eating some of the veggies that we grow on here.”

I read that thread not long after it was on FR and didn't comment. To my knowledge, I've never had kale. The rest I eat. I grew up on fried okra, we always had that in the garden.

Checked the garden this morning, and the tall Homemade Pickles cucumber plant that is two feet tall, has blooms on it this morning. I have other Homemade Pickles plants and they look good, were planted after the tall one due to the Jiffy ones not coming up and having to start over.

The small National Pickles cucumber plant has two blooms on it this morning. Think that plant is a fluke because it's no more than 4 inches tall and not great looking and wilted after that last cold, then sort of recovered. It has guts to insist on blooming being that small.

Strawberries are doing great to keep turning red.

rightly, I admire your tomato plants - wish mine looked that good which they don't.

The Snowbird Pea has more pods on it than the Masterpiece Pea but they are still in the process of growing/producing. The Peas In A Pot is not doing as well as those. By the time this growing season is over, I'll know which plants to stick with for next year and plant enough of them to supply what I want.

My cataract surgery did not go that well. I've been on blood pressure medicine for a good while and that causes a condition in the eyes that requires the doc to have to spend more time in the eye so more time for recovery. The right one was done last and the cataract was worse in that eye which took more time plus the blood pressure problem, and the next day I was blind in that eye which didn't happen with the first one. That freaked me out but when got to doctor he said due to being in there longer, the eye had swelled and I'd start gradually seeing out of that eye as the swelling went down. It took about a week for the swelling to go away.

A medical first happened with my first eye done. My eye could see what he was doing. I saw the lens break and fall down like pieces of shiny broken glass. Then the eye saw those pieces sucked out. Since I had never had that done, I thought it was normal for the eye to see that. Next day at doctor's I said I watched it happen in that eye. He was shocked and said no one had ever said that, no one saw that, and that should be in a medical journal. For the next eye, he knocked me totally out with the anesthetic which is not normally done. I knew nothing until it was over.

I see better than I ever have in my life. I was near sighted so long distance seeing didn't happen without glasses. Now, my long sight is 20-20 without glasses. I must have glasses for reading, however. Can't read jack without glasses but I have worn glasses since about 5th grade so the wearing isn't a problem.

I have a small nose bridge, always a problem to find glasses that fit, and these new reading glasses are a child's frame and they fit just swell. When I picked up that frame, the woman said those are for children. I put them on and she said, “Oh, they fit you.” I didn't realize they were titanium but knew it when I saw the charge. I'll never need another pair.

I found the thread early myself but didn’t comment either.

Sounds like your farm is going strong.

Thanks for the kind words on the maters.

We just got back from the 24hr check in with the eye dr. Her second eye is far better than the first one from 2 wks ago, but it is doing good he said. She went back to surgery at 5:55 and at 6:50 we were on the street in front of the bldg saying bye bye. That just amazes me, that it is so quick.

Neither of mine were that quick due to taking longer to work in the eye, but compared to any other surgery, it was fast. If everything goes well, takes about 30 min. to do an eye. Also, because he put me totally out for the last eye, had to be in recovery longer to get over anesthetic.

The worst part of both surgeries, was getting up so early to be there. My friend, Melinda, took me for both surgeries, and she is like me that getting up early just isn't done. Think we had to get up at 4 am to be there. We both sleep walked into that building. I, of course, couldn't have anything to drink that morning, so no coffee. When we got out of there both times, we went to the drive in window of Starbucks on 105 and I had a Starbucks gift card from family from the last Christmas, so we used that to get coffee.

For that last eye, we were both worried because I was blind the next day - we were anxious to get to the doctor that day due to the blindness.

I also was grateful my eyes could be fixed. Before this surgery was possible, people just went blind. We have much to be thankful for in medical care. Now, with Obamacare, I hope we keep the ability to get surgery. I've said seniors may be turned into Soylent Green after they reach a certain age. Maybe I need to watch that movie again. :o)

I almost never use cilantro. The few times I have, I didn’t particularly care for it. Could have just been the recipe.

My mom’s neighbor went blind from cataracts in the early 70’s, but he still gardened. He put a string about 2ft above each row so he could know where he was at, and knelt and felt around for weeds and pulled them.
