I grew up in a family divided by a number of things. I was, as a consequence, never baptized as a child, and never had any formal religious training (until adulthood), despite both Catholic and Jewish backgrounds. Easter was celebrated, but it didn’t involve church. It involved lots of cooking and food, and always an Easter basket full of chocolate. Ironically, although I love chocolate, I would love to be able to go back in time and have the Easter of my youth emphasize God.

It was a matter of ignorance, and abuse of one of my parents by my grandfather - among other things - that led to this. The pathology, though, was not just on one side, so Easter, as all major holidays, would usually involve debate and fighting about something stupid and inconsequential.

So, today I am blessed with an incredible child who we have tried to expose to God in the best ways we know how. We are very, very fortunate and blessed, and he is very, very well adjusted, and has a wonderful relationship with God. He has his own opinions, and his own very unique world view, but above all is kind, charitable, and so much more than I have ever been.

So, I now understand and appreciate the deep and wonderful message of Easter.
