Pesto is basil, olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, and grated firm sheep’s milk cheese.

While I am no fan of cilantro, any homemade salsa worth anything has a bit in it.

Pesto is traditionally basil-based, but it's gotten to be like "martinis" --- anything goes. I've seen pesto recipes with spinach, kale, and collard greens. Choose your favorite nut and cheese and voila, "pesto"!
