Thanks. I don’t recognize all the names, so I’ll have to check them out. Most of the ones I do know, are about 2 plus hours away.

Ok. Got it GLG. I figured those buzzards must have had a carcass somewhere.

Good skill to have. Lots of 'preppers' are going to starve when they realize that those open-pollinated seeds require real skill-sets to turn into food.

My wife was speaking just yesterday at supper of having a mater and mayo sandwich with a glass of tea as soon as we get some maters ripe. I like mine plain, sliced and on a plate with pepper. I can easily eat two large ones per day in the season.

Oh don't get me wrong. I love homegrown tomatoes on everything. Salads, cheese and tomato sandwich. Tomato, lettuce and mayo. Hamburgers. Gyros. But BLTs are my nectar of the gods when it comes to tomatoes.

I’ll have to remember “nectar of the gods”

I haven’t had a blt in many years, since I quit lettuce, but bt sammies are good, too.

2 things that I rely on out of my garden are tomatoes and jalapenos. I'll need to can at least 2 gallons of japs to get me through until next year.

I recently retired and the one thing I will miss is taking heirloom tomatoes, jalapenos, tomatatoes, cilantro, lime juice, etc. and chips to work and watch people become absolute addicts to salsa.

I took your advice and grew some replacement tomatoes and peppers. Unlike you it seems I didn’t grow quite enough in reserve for comfort level plus I was a little dumb and hasty in transplanting a few too small plants especially those slow growing peppers. Still have a scant tiny few in reserve and they are hardly growing out of their sprout stage but I have them outside in the warm sun now so here’s hoping they have a growth spurt and in the ground they will go then.

Careful...my addiction to salsa led to planting 400 varieties of tomatoes and 30 or so varieties of super-hot peppers in just a few short years. I’m not sure what happened...

I was in the gutter at about 80 varieties. Your tolerance was much higher than mine.

Tell us about your drip irrigation and how you manage it. I’m interested in trying that for pots on the South-facing front porch where my pots tend to dry out suddenly. I don’t know where to start.

But, I was very impressed with the Sr. Living Home where my mother passed away in April. We arrived April 5. I noticed that their urns and pots had just been planted — little marigold seedlings, pansies, etc. No plant was bigger than one stalk and one flower. By the time we left on April 14 (9 days later) those same pots were filled to overflowing with flowers. Each pot was fed by a tiny black tube that was hardly noticeable. Of course, the weather was warmer than what we’ve been having, but I’m interested in trying this method for my front porch, rather than leaving my plants to the mercy of a neighborhood waterer when I have to be gone.

I noticed that. Will check it out in more detail later. I ordered a bunch of bulk spices last year from:

www.sahuarospiceco.com

Saved a lot of money when making pickles, plus was able to get spices that local stores didn’t have. I’ll compare the prices when I get ready to reorder.

If they are the same, I’ll get all that I can from a Mo. store is my rule. That’s why I like to get stuff from my local Country Mart rather than Walmart. They have more local stuff available, and distribution on canned goods is in Missouri not Arkansas.

Right now, it's soaker hoses on a manifold with individual valves. I manage it by being out there and turning them on and off. I have more time than money.

For everything that's not in the big garden, I hand water. 5 gallon bucket of rain water and an old tin can to scoop it out. Really high tech.

I don't leave when my garden is in season. ;)

Well, I have been away for a while, but lurking on this thread each week for some time. Thought y’all would be interested to hear my gardening tale of late.

Moved to WI a couple summers ago and this is the first year that I have really gotten serious about growing some food. Rented some land from a relative and have a plot of it worked up. on half of it is currently the skeleton of a 14x32 greenhouse. In that, I plan to put about 80 tomatoes that I have been raising from seed since the second weekend in March. Never built a greenhouse before and never started maters from seed before. Add to that never tried to harden off tomatoes I started from seed until today. WE also are heading to Canada to visit the inlaws for 2 weeks next weekend. I am very hopeful that I will have the greenhouse finished before then, and the tomatoes in the ground inside it before we leave. Will also need to set up an irrigation system. Nothing like waiting til the last minute, eh?

We moved here because we could find work here and as such, I have been working full time and also quite a bit of overtime at a nearby factory. 3rd shift. It makes most other activities difficult when you do that. c’est la vie, I guess...

I haven’t had a ‘food’ garden since my knee operation, but I hope to put in some tomatoes when it gets warmer. I can handle the watering in the ‘food’ garden with a timer on a sprinkler. But, flower pots on the front porch are always a problem. The house is red brick, as are the pavers on the porch. The house faces directly South and is just a magnet for the sun. I can kill a beautiful urn of flowers in one afternoon when it turns hot, even if I’ve watered it in the morning.

She’s getting used to our local ways of doing things...but having to follow a tractor and manure spreader on the highway or seeing a cow in the road still throws her for a loop...;)

Glad to see that you are recovering from the knee, you have been missed here.

Try this for drip irrigation. I started with a kit and have expanded to had the entire yard on drip, flower beds, containers, and garden all controlled on 3 timers.
