The teacher was able to roll a big cart into the classroom, which had a big, boxy B&W TV on top.

We watched the whole thing as it happened.
It was one of the most thrilling moments of my childhood!

I wanted to be the first girl astronaut, but Sally beat me to it!

I don’t recall our school paying any attention to the Shepard flight. However, John Glenn’s flight was a big deal which I’ll never forget. The teacher wheeled a TV into the classroom and we watched it most of that day. Watching space shots in the classroom was routine during the whole Mercury series. By Gemini, some of the novelty had worn off.
