When He Made the Decision to Stab Her, He Had No Idea What She Was Carrying in Her Purse

A Dallas woman might have been killed if she wasn’t carrying her firearm last week. Police say Angela Martin, 44, shot and killed a man who began stabbing her during an altercation on Friday.

Martin, who is the assistant manager at the Dallas apartment complex where the incident occurred, was arguing with an unidentified female resident while sitting in her car when things started to get heated.

The woman’s husband, identified as 52-year-old Louis Rodriguez, eventually got involved in the altercation.

When she started to feel unsafe, Martin says she retrieved her handgun from her purse and placed it on her lap. She stayed inside her vehicle.

I guess I missed where they said she had the keys in the ignition. If she didn’t, she might not be able to roll up the window or drive away.
I imagine she is not happy to have had to defend herself, but glad she had the gun.

2 blasts in the air out the sunroof should have sufficed according to Uncle Joe.

“When she started to feel unsafe, Martin” should have driven away.

No duty to retreat in Texas.

Even the cockroaches pack heat in Texas.

Since she helped manage the place she probably felt she had to deal with these people sooner or later.

You have grossly misread my intent. She was smart to be prepared with a firearm. She would be even smarter to have left before being stabbed. Don’t you agree?

“When she started to feel unsafe, Martin” should have driven away.

Rewarding intimidation brings more intimidation.

You know that’s a nice picture and all but I think the whole idea promoted in US schools that the War of Independence was a battle between “Americans” and their “British” rulers obscures the real, much more relevant issue.

It was not a war between Americans and British but a war between Americans who supported the government’s right to tell them what to do and Americans who wanted more freedom from their government. Most of those Americans would also have regarded themselves as British, if that doesn’t sound too complicated.

Paul Revere did not warn “the British are coming”, he warned that the regulars, ie government forces, were coming and that the citizen militias needed to arm themselves to fight the government troops.

Of course if schoolkids were taught this today it might put a whole different perspective on the position of the individual citizen and his right to resist the government by force of arms, something that government-funded, union-member teachers in government run schools are unlikely to feel comfortable with. Much easier to represent the issue as a simple matter of national liberation against “foreigners”.

In my opinion the tag in the picture should say the day the government came to take away Americans’ guns.

Sorry if I ramble a bit here.

Not sure if she would agree that it was worth getting stabbed. But I could be wrong.

Correct. She was certainly within her rights. I wouldn’t have held it against her had she shot him when he came at her with the knife but had not stabbed her yet. But looking back I wonder if she would have preferred not to have been stabbed...

Most likely dead. She was very smart to have it, and have it ready.

Agreed. No one knows how they will react to being stabbed until it happens. Kudos to her for being prepared and reacting in a way that saved her life and protects society at large from further criminals acts from the perp.

Shooting the bastard beats running away because she felt uncomfortable. Life is full of uncomfortable moments. Being an adult means confronting them and overcoming them.

Your original comment advocated running away when she felt uncomfortable.

The ‘I carry a weapon’ attitude is not particular to cops.

Some of the citizens won't run away, even if they aren't armed. Cowardice is distasteful to some.

Kinda hard to do the job of property manager with that victim mentality.

I read uncomfortable as threatened as she pulled out her firearm. There is a big difference.

I’m assuming Texas has Stand Your Ground law...if you have a legal right to be there, nobody can force you to leave.
