Ron Howard, the Oscar-winning director, has put his family home and farm up for sale near Greenwich, Conn., for $27.5 million.

The lakefront estate is made up of 32 acres of land straddling the Connecticut and New York border. In addition to a working farm, the property includes a more than 17,200-square-foot main residence, a guesthouse, an indoor sports complex, an observatory, riding trails and woods.

Howard and his wife, Cheryl, raised their family in the classic New England-style home. Among the rooms are a two-story office/library, a 14-seat theater, six bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The guesthouse has two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.

There’s an indoor saltwater swimming pool, a gym and a yoga studio. The sports complex houses an indoor sports court and a basketball half-court

“Kids are grown so he doesn’t need a house that big. What, did he have 25 kids?”

4 kids actually. :-)

By contrast, when Elvis Presley bought Graceland, it was only 13.8 acres, the main house was only about 7000 square feet and he renovated and expanded it to 12000 square feet. And he had only one kid: Lisa Marie. Though he stuffed the house full with friends and family and employees.

Hollywood is VASTLY overpaid.

That's because Hollywood professions are some of the last that are purely capitalistic, rather ironic huh?

Yeah, beautiful wood. The downstairs wouldn’t accommodate the books I already have stuffed into the cabin but the mezzanine would. I’m thinking of inviting ‘Bridge to be my guest out in Idaho. It isn’t quite the same thing as a mansion in Connecticut, but the outhouse has a guest side that doesn’t have so many spiders...

And Hollywood gets tons of tax cuts....so obviously they realize tax cuts are good......for them.

I grew up 20 minutes and @ $27.4M away from Howard estate. If he lived just a few miles in, on the NYS side, his taxes would be double or triple what they are in CT. It’s a wonder anyone lives in Westchester any more.

This looks like a great place to have raised a family, and the Howards seem to have a good sense of its being time to ‘move on.’ They will have no problem selling it, certainly for upwards of $20M if not the full asking price. But who’s going to quibble about a few mil, eh?

Might be worth $5 million!

{^) LOL!

It's a gorgeous house! Just beautiful! Big, but reserved and pretty sensible, made for being lived in. And it's on 37 scenic acres, too.

Good taste, good design, quietly impressive instead of in-your-face opulence.

Yep.

Not sure about the law, today, but in the 70’s, a friend’s parents bought a nice place, where the residence in Danbury, CT was on a piece of land that crossed the border into Brewster, NY. The tax hassle, etc. was so bad they tried to sell the 1/4 acre in NY for $1.00 - but no one would take it. They ended up selling the property at a loss, just to get out, from underneath it.

Even the left-wing nut cases realize that living in Connecticut makes little sense because of the legislature’s desire to tax anyone not on welfare at the highest possible rates.

I’m sure he’ll donate the proceeds of the sale to those less fortunate

He was OK as a young Opie.Since then he's done nothing of genuine value.

He's a hit-or-miss director. Apollo 13 is a classic --one of those movies I can watch over and over again. I really enjoyed his latest, Rush as well.

Of course, he's lensed a few stinkers. Haven't they all, though.

I’m just speculating but I’d think those a**holes would have it down to a science, after all tax revenue is what they care about the most. I hope Ritchie Cunningham gets hosed.

I saw this thing on the History channel, “How the States got their Shapes”. There was this bar/restaurant in both Tennessee and Georgia. The Georgia county is dry, so no booze allowed in the kitchen.

Pretty stupid. I think we should repeal section 2 of the 21st amendment and get rid of the last vestiges of prohibition.

I'm surprised by that. One would think it would be easy...10,000 square feet of land, without a residential structure,is located in Anytown,NY...the rest of the "plot" is located in Anytown,CT.Two bills...one for 10,000 sq ft from NY...and another from CT.

But then maybe I'm not factoring in self centered politicians and self centered lawyers.

I heard on the radio today that this is the last year the NFL Draft is contracted to be in NYC; CHI and LA are looking to host.

IMO, the NFL should have their Draft in different locations, like the Superbowl.

“How the States got their Shapes”.

IIRC, I saw a book with exactly that title maybe a year ago in Barnes & Noble. Didn't buy or read it, but it should have some interesting tales - not sure how accurate they may be - for history buffs.

I'm quite certain that if you look sufficiently, you can find one historical document or another that specifies any of the boundaries between the states.

I know there are a number of properties that are partly in one state and partly in another. One of them is very well known and owned by the federal government: Yellowstone National Park.
