A FReeper got a Leaf
self | ctdonath2

Posted on 05/07/2014 9:16:24 AM PDT by ctdonath2

I did it. I got an electric car. A Nissan Leaf.

Whatever the origins, the confluence of factors made it absurd not to. Buyers get a $7500 credit off federal taxes. Georgia offers $5000 off purchase or lease. Power usage costs about $25/mo (vs gas at $150-300). That, plus negotiating, makes a 2 year lease net cost $0, if not negative. That I was driving a '98 POS facing major repairs, plus legislative movements reconsidering the incentives, made it a must-do.

If you're in a state with similar incentives, and have any reason at all to get another car, do it.

Environmentalism? Reducing pollution et al is a good thing, but as I was otherwise looking at a Jeep Wrangler, not a major factor. Taxation/redistribution? Getting mine $$$ back is a good thing. If they're gonna legislate it, use it.

Just a happy new nifty car owner here, had to share. Get your free car now if you can.

“Why should only liberals get this money?”

Bingo.

You are correct. Being retired, I am never in a hurry so I use city streets in lieu of the freeway, when I can.

You gonna drive it on I-285 at 4:00pm on a Friday?

Abuse, I’d point out, that is actually pretty silly.

If you’d come out here with an “I love the environment, the government should make you love it too by forcing everyone to buy Leafs (er, Leaves?)” then I’d have a probem.

But it sounds like you did your homework, knew your needs and did proper cost/benefit and return on investment analysis. In other words you made an informed and rational choice based on objective criteria and fact.

Conservatives shouldn’t have any problem with that.

One question tho: what other electric/hybrid options did you explore, and how did they factor into your eventual choice?

Of course, none of this matters to me that much being that I need a 3/4 or 1 ton truck for electrical oil field.

I think my big jacked up truck gets like 10mpg heh.

I ain’t gonna drive on I-285 at 4:00pm on a Friday in anything. Damn parking lot.
Actually, I may prefer the Leaf in that case, as it “burns” nothing when stops and has a stop-and-go favorable drive mode that uses frequent braking optimally for recharging.

Thank you. This is serving to separate some of the sensible conservatives from hypocritical frothing at the mouth ones.

Didn’t look at any other EV. Three other hardcore smart conservatives in the office got Leafs (they all basically said “duh - get one already!”), the Volt is the only equivalent and that’s a joke from Obama administration’s involvement, the Tesla is just way too expensive, the Leaf has great reviews, and the math easily added up to $free. It was a no-brainer.

Interesting. It does say I can save $4600 a year in fuel costs. (I drive over 100 miles a day @ 21mpg. They used $3.44/gal in the calc.).

If I bought the high end leaf at list of $36,000 (assuming they won't come down, read somewhere there is a $8000 Manufacuturer rebate that I'm not counting). Financed at 0% over 60 months. That's $600 a month car payment. But I save $383 a month in fuel. So that's $600-383 = $216 month increase. $216 over the course of 60 months = $13000.

But then I get a $7500 one-time tax credit. Net cost is $6500.

Manufacturer's warranty is 60 months. Wonder if that includes batteries?

Tennessee doesn't supplement, but you do get a sticker that allows you to drive in the HOV lanes.

Range is 84 miles on a single Charge. I'm out!!!

I must admit, it would sure be nice to see oil one day become obsolete. Have all these Islamo terror supporting oil producing countries just hit absolute rock bottom economically. “Hey, try calling yourself ‘Prince’ now Sheik Ali Ali Akbar”

“But then I get a $7500 one-time tax credit. Net cost is $6500.”

That’s federal credit. Then you get $5000 state tax credit if you live in GA.
$1500.
For a new car.

Yes, 85 miles. For those of us doing 30-50 mile regular round trips, it works. Might not for you.

Been looking that way for Mrs. Moehoward. No the Leaf though. She does have a 20 minute highway commute. Love to get an S Tesla, but too pricey at the moment. Probably be a new(ish) Prius.

I have a nephew who has one in Michigan. He drives it 40 miles each way to work everyday and has never had a problem with the cold, although running the heater does drain the battery faster. His office has charging stations, so he doesn’t pay for the power at that end.

That $7,500 subsidy came from the taxpayers. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a subsidy.

Below I quoted what you posted. that proves you are a socialist/marixist/democrat environmentalist. you don’t fool . who is destroying the planet, the evil oil and coal companies? here’s a clue global warming is a hoax. nothing wrong with coal and oil which is why you democrats had to INVENT a FAKE crisis like man made global warming to demonize oil , coal and capitalism and so enslave us and grow socialism
you said
“As for “evil environmentalism”, being conservative doesn’t mean deliberately trashing the planet. I’m all for being early adopter in lots of high technologies

Do you take any tax deductions whatsoever?

I needed a car. REALLY needed a car.
I’ve payed way more than $12500 in taxes.
I like electric cars, being a first-adopter techno-geek.
Calling me a liberal (as you mean it) is laughably stupid; I’m right of the Tea Party.
I found a way to get my money back and get a car I want.
Legislatures are starting to consider ending the rebate programs because so many people like me are using it to the point of actually starving the beast (GA’s road maintenance fund is empty for the year now); should it be eliminated, you can be sure they won’t be reducing anyone’s taxes accordingly.
What I’m doing is more like recognizing that the monster does in fact exist, is using its own food (stolen from me) as bait, and to its chagrin I’m taking that food back.
Got that? all I’m doing is taking back some of what was mine, in a way which by sheer freaking coincidence matches my current needs.

Considering your reasoning, you’re violating your own principles by paying any taxes whatsoever and taking any deductions/refunds/rebates/etc whatsoever.

“That $7,500 subsidy came from the taxpayers.”

I’m a taxpayer, and have payed orders of magnitude more than $7500 in taxes.
I’m getting my own money back.
