He showed me his watch...big gold jobbie, and said he could put it on the hood of his car and leave it there all day. He said you’d occassionally see a man with one hand, but he had yet to see a man with no hands. For what it’s worth....

At one time these people were nomads. Every item they owned was needed to survive the harsh desert climate where they lived. Stealing from someone, even something simple like a blanket, quite literally condemned that person to death as he was no longer able to survive.

As such, they took stealing very seriously.

Which is why, back in the day,horse theft was a capital offense in Texas.
