EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Michael Sam made history Saturday afternoon, as the St. Louis Rams made him the 249th overall choice in the 2014 NFL draft.
The Missouri defensive end becomes the first openly gay player to be drafted in league history and seeks to be the first openly gay player ever to play in the NFL. Video of Sam receiving the call from the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher revealed the player's emotion while surrounded by friends, family and his boyfriend.
"In a world of diversity we live in, I am honored to be a part of this," Fisher told ESPN.
"I don't want it to become an unusual distraction for his teammates but him as well," Fisher added.

The question should be “Can he play better at the Pro level than anyone else drafted at his level and will he be an asset to the team?”
If not then he was drafted because he was gay and not because he earned the slot.
As for football - I can’t remember when was the last time I sat down and watched a game. Same with basketball and baseball.

I figured that the Redskins would draft him. That way, if they got grief about their name, they could just say they were honoring the Village People.

You’ve got to admit Sam is pretty smart. There are reports that he has a record level of endorsement offers. If he is cut, all hell will break out so he’s got a couple years of big bucks with the endorsements. He’s sure to fit right into the ranks of ESPN commentators (the gay insight to the NFL). All in all, he’s got a sweet career mapped out.
The Rams had a hell of a draft. By almost all accounts they had the best draft of all NFL teams. IF Sam works out and plays like he did last year it will be a hell of a 7th round steal. But he’s too small to play DE and too slow to play OLB in the NFL. At least they got him cheap.

Well at least we know when they move back to LA, they'll have a built-in fan base.
