n Ohio mother who gave birth to twins got a special Mother’s Day surprise Sunday when her difficult pregnancy culminated with the photograph of a lifetime: a picture of her babies, barely a minute old, holding hands as they faced their new world.

Sarah Thistlewhistle’s newborns were monoamniotic—or “mono mono”—twins, a rare condition in which two fetuses share a single amniotic sack and remain in near-constant physical contact for the duration of the pregnancy. The formation occurs in approximately .3 percent of births and can require intensive care during the third trimester to avoid complications.

The doctor had left the room after my sister was born, and the nurse called him back a half hour later when I made an appearance. They had no idea there were 2 babies in there, and we weighed 8 pounds, combined! Needless to say, my father nearly passed out!

That is really cute, but those girls are going to need each other if they are going to carry the name “Thistlewhistle” through school. Can you imagine the teasing?

I wonder if they were born Cesarean or naturally?

I didn’t realize it is that rare! My twin girls were in one sack also. They will be 37 in Sept. My how time flies! Having twins was a lot of fun! They have spent a lifetime trying to look different however...lol

Lots of twins on both sides of my family. My grandmother was a twin also. True story...my grandmother was named Estee and her sister was Uvee (ST & UV for those in Rio Linda...lol). My first cousins, also twins, begged me not to rhyme my girls’ names and I took their advice. My girls are grateful that I didn’t rhyme them.

‘Our G-d is an awesome G-d.’ I agree but why are you leaving out the o? Far as I know to say God is not yet profane. I am sure one day it will, but not yet.

Why is God sometimes spelled G-d? I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ I just don't understand the reason behind the spelling.

Just met a couple that had kids in the late 60’s. They had twins......doctors never saw it coming. I can only imagine.

Many people (usually Jews and some evangelicals) consider the name of G-d so holy that we are not worthy of speaking or writing His name...for me, a sign of respect for His holy name.

I can top that. My mother didn’t know she would have twins until she had the first one—me.

My mom kept telling the doctor she was carrying an octopus. But back in those days, all they did was listen for heartbeats, and there was only 1 detected. Sure enough, mom went into very early labor and after I was born, they saw my sister’s feet! We were really tiny, 4.2 & 3.8 and my sister had some lung issues, but we survived and thrived. The Dr. claimed there was one sac and a shared placenta, but that’s doubtful because we are clearly not identical, I look native American and she is all Irish!

Nice! They seem to be a pretty good size for twins, too.

Actually I think the story was something like the Vikings were invading and had taken off their boots for stealth. Then they stepped into a thistle bed and were less than quiet thereafter. It’s not so sneaky when you’re shrieking in pain with needles stuck in your feet.

Jillian weighed in at 3 lbs 13 oz and her sister Jenna at 4 lbs 2 oz per an article in the Akron Beacon Journal yesterday.

Wow, looks are deceiving -- I gave them twice that from the photo -- I guess it's true what they say: the camera puts weight on you! LOL!

I’m sorry to read your daughter/family went through that painful experience. Happy she later had her healthy baby girl.

We’re inclined these days to forget the dangers of each and every pregnancy. We’ve become accustomed to everything turning out just right. Not too long ago, that was not the case. Still, the risk remains and is so painful for those affected.
