Hollywood actor Denis Lawson has turned down the chance to appear in the new Star Wars films because they would have “bored him”.
The Crieff-born star said he had been approached by Disney, which bought Lucasfilm in 2012, but turned them down.
The 66-year-old played X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles in all three films of the original trilogy. In 2001, he provided the voiceover for the character’s appearance in a Nintendo computer game.
Lawson made the revelation at a screening of his most recent film, The Machine, at Strathearn Artspace in his home town.
When asked if the next new Denis Lawson film to be screened there would be Star Wars, he replied: “I’m not going to do that.”
Asked if it was because Disney had taken over the franchise, he replied: “They asked me but it just would have bored me.”

I agree with him, and they bored me, because they were absolutely awful.
Should’ve just taken the big paychecks and grinned & borne it. It’s just acting, after all.
I had no idea he was in all three movies or that he had a name for his character. I thought he was a generic x-wing pilot.

IT’S A TRAP!
I watched the first Star Wars in the theater 28 times. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The Empire Strikes Back was, in my opinion, the best and most adult of the films. But the last three were torture. The stories were just stupid and the acting of the your darth vader was so mind bogglingly bad that it was comedic.
Good special effects though. That kept me interested for ten minutes or so.
Kinda reminds me of The Matrix. I own all of them (as I do the Star Wars movies). The first was based on a solid story, arguably a alegory of Christianity (Christians have taken the red pill). The second two were created by “lesser writers” with a different objective. Again, great special effects but dumb stories. At least the acting was better.
Good for him. The last three were mind-numbingly boring and any new ones will be too. Duval, to his credit, did the same thing when asked to be in Godfather III. He turned down a paycheck to avoid being in a disaster that cheapened the original work.
They all bored me. Enough that I never watched any of them.
If you’re not hurting for work being stunt cast probably isn’t terribly interesting. OK it’s probably dull if you are hurting for work, but then you need the paycheck so you suck it up.
...unless they recently changed the rules in Hollyweird, if you have any spoken lines at all on camera — even something like a simple, “LOOK OUT!!” — you get a character name and a screen credit.
That’s the way it usta wuz, anyway...
I get his point. Given that JJ Abrams is helming the next trilogy, no one would even see ol’ Wedge over all the lens flare ..
Saw that. Lots of sci-fi actors in that one.
For the same reason the actor discussed similar feelings.
They were boring.
And bad.

I saw all three of the first films growing up as a boy. They were just absolutely awesome.
Like pillar of one’s early life type of awesome. They came from a time when movies in general were phenomenal.
I couldn’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen each of them.
The second set of three I’ve seen one time each, and I’ll never watch them again.
They were pitiful, empty, hollow and meaningless. And yeah, the acting was...I’ve seen better acting in high school plays honestly.
I also thought the Matrix was considerably better than these 3 Star Wars films. I’ve seen all 3 Matrix a number of times, and I enjoy them each time.
In my adult life I have come to find that in movies special effects are the least interesting element for me. It’s the story, the acting and the depth of characters that draws me in, and the three most recent films had none of those things at all.
I’ll not be seeing any additional Star Wars movies. I have memories from my youth, and I don’t want those memories tainted with crap from today.
