Official: Conyers lacks signatures for ballot

DETROIT (AP) - Longtime Congressman John Conyers of Michigan doesn't have enough signatures to appear on the Aug. 5 primary ballot, an elections official announced Tuesday.

Conyers' nominating petitions were insufficient, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett said in a statement.

It follows her report last week finding Conyers more than 400 signatures short of 1,000 needed. Garrett said Tuesday that he had 592 valid signatures after challenges.

The 84-year-old Detroit Democrat was at risk because officials believe several people who circulated his petitions do not appear to have been registered voters or had registered too late.

.......................

Federal court actions, meanwhile, are taking aim at the requirement that petition collectors be registered voters. The ACLU has filed suit to change state law. If neither happens, Conyers can run as a write-in. If he wins the primary as a write-in, he would qualify for the general election ballot.

The county clerk is herself a black democrat and she didn’t let it slide. They tried to screw Mike Duggan to keep him off the ballot and the state stepped in and set things right.

These officials are on notice and unwilling to go down for anyone. If Conyers wins he’ll have to do it as a write in and he’ll have to do it honestly.

Just what American elections need: lower standards.

I heard an interesting comment about this on the local radio station WJR. The host asked a local pol if Conyers could pull off the same feat as Duggan, the mayor, and win with a write in campaign. The pol answered: “Duggan had two things going for him. He had strong financial backing, and he was in his right mind. Conyers has neither of those advantages!”

The guy’s 84 and doesn’t know it’s time to just quit?

It's never time to quit when you can write laws for other people, not have to follow them, and be permitted to travel worldwide on the taxpayer's dime.

I bet the lack of an adequate number of signatures on a petition for Conyers will not stop him from retaining his position in Congress. Any other outcome would be totally repressive.

“he had 592 valid signatures “

that’s the problem, democrats are not used to having to get valid signatures.

The ACLU has filed suit to change state law.

WTF? Why is the ACLU involved? Ah. Stupid question. Never mind.

I don’t usually pay much attention to my local news broadcasts, but I did happen to catch a bit of coverage of this issue. Evidently, MI requires that folks that are collecting petition signatures for potential candidates, the sig collectors must also be legally registered voters.

It appears that at least 2 of his signature collectors were not registered voters, in fact one of them also had a warrant out for his arrest! The number of signatures collected illegally was 640 signatures. All that was required was 1,000 signatures.

In other words, 64% of the signatures collected were collected in a criminal manner and many of those were collected by an actual criminal that is on the run!

Ho hum, Democrat party operations as normal....

Don’t celebrate quite yet - what do you want to bet that they’ll find a way to put him on the ballot... otherwise it would be racist.

Don’t you realize that for a “minority” to have to get signatures to get on a ballot is as “unfair” as expecting a minority to get a voter ID card in order to vote?

The Pubbies need to find about a half dozen people to run as write-ins. If they could find someone named “Conyers” to run and if people just write-in “Conyers” it would have to be thrown out because it cannot be ascertained as to which Conyers that person was voting for. Also, run someone named John Connors or John Cleveland or John Curry.... any Last name beginning with “C” that would eliminate any ballot write-ins saying “John C.” They could play this thing any number of ways to get votes thrown out.

Come to find out, one of the people circulating the petitions for Conyers was a fugitive on the lam. I read that the other day, and Rush Limbaugh mentioned it again today on his radio show.
