Godzilla 2014 Movie Review: King of Monsters the Hero, Film Upholds 1954 ‘Gojira’ Legacy
Epoch Times ^

No one can blame Gareth Edwards for admittedly feeling nervous when asked to helm a remake of the biggest monster movie of all time. Sure, the only other film he had directed happened to be 2010′s “Monsters.” But this time, it was Godzilla.

Well, the latest iteration of the 60-year-old franchise is in capable hands. Edwards’ “Godzilla” is a pleasingly paced 3-D spectacle that pays chilling homage to the artful legacy of the original 1954 film — Ishiro Honda’s “Gojira” — while emerging as its own prodigious monster movie.

In terms of its impact on later works - as well as being an almost universal cultural icon - Honda’s 1954 film ‘Gojira’ certainly left its mark, no doubt about that.

Box-office wise? Probably not so much, but 60 years later, the Big Green Lizard is still with us.

So is every other of the big 50's monsters: Vampires, Frankenstien, Wolfman, zombies, etc. etc. And for every Godzilla movie there's been well over a dozen vampire movies. It think giant lizards peaked with "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster". The shark had been jumped.

My favorite: Godzilla vs Mothra. We need more Mothra!!! The bottom line is it’s a movie. Don’t analyze it too much. Have fun!

Agree. I actually liked the original Godzilla (Oh, no...there goes Tokyo) with Raymond Burr. The one that came out about 15 years ago with Matt Broadrick was a stinker though.

Does this movie contain the required positive gay couple and are the villains straight white guys?

This is just more proof that Hollywood has run out of original ideas. Another remake of a 60 year old movie but now it is in ‘3D.’ Oh how can we resist?

The idea for Godzilla(1954) was derived from the earlier succ3essful movie The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953).

The Raymond Burr scenes were spliced in later, for the 1956 re-release to the US.

I recall seeing a Godzilla triple bill at the local theater.

Godzilla vs King Kong ! I thought a riot was going to breakout. There were factions for both sides going at it.

Silly premise. In King Kong's original movie, he was hurt by .30-cal machine gun fire from biplanes. Godzilla was much bigger and shrugged off tank rounds.
