SAN FRANCISCO -- Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez will have Tommy John surgery Friday, ending the season for the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.
Manager Mike Redmond announced Thursday the right-hander would have the elbow ligament transplant procedure. The decision was expected after the 21-year-old Fernandez was put on the disabled list this week.
"Our focus is to get him back," Redmond said before the Marlins began a four-game series in San Francisco. "I'm glad he's having it done and starting his recovery process. Obviously it's a big blow for us."
The operation will be done in Los Angeles. Fernandez becomes the latest in a string of major league pitchers this year who have needed Tommy John surgery. The rehabilitation period for Tommy John surgery can be 12 to 18 months.
Fernandez, 21, was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts this season. He led the majors with 70 strikeouts.
However, he was roughed up during his last outing, last week against the San Diego Padres, giving up six runs in five innings, including two home runs.
Fernandez's fastball averaged 94.6 mph over his first four innings against the Padres but only 90.7 mph over his last two, according to ESPN's Stats & Information. He allowed four runs in the sixth inning before being removed with nobody out.
Last season Fernandez made 28 starts, going 12-6 with a major league-best .182 opponents' batting average. His 2.19 ERA was second in the majors behind three-time defending ERA champ Clayton Kershaw. Fernandez struck out 187 batters and was named NL Rookie of the Year.
Anthony DeSclafani, who started in place of Fernandez and made his major league debut during Sunday's 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, will remain in the Marlins rotation.

Little early to think about the world series but if it started right now it would be a pure midwest series between the Tigers and Brewers.
He’ll be gone to another team for more money as soon as he is able just like all the other Marlin’s stars.
They need to remember to pack their bats on road trips.
They have only 4 road wins this year, and are about to blow another lead against the Giants tonight.
Their bullpen with the exception of their closer sucks, and their remaining starters are inconsistent.
On the positive side, they are drawing lots more people at home this season.

It’s really too bad because this guy seems the best young pitcher in baseball, all ready among the elite. Probably second in the NL after Kershaw.
He can come back. That’s the good thing. In the past, before Tommy John, a lot of good pitchers just lost it inexplicably, it seemed, and were out of the game. Now they are diagnosed and can have this surgery.
Dr Jobe recently passed away, so it’s too late no, but I thought he deserved a Nobel Prize in Medicine.
$10.50/beer is what it is. Still a cool ballpark. If anyone gets a chance (try to catch a day game), it's unlike anything you've ever seen. The first thing that stands out when you see it is that it is the smallest park in MLB and yet is the biggest park in MLB at the same time. Like being in a big barn.

Take Henderson Alvarez. I saw the guy pitch a complete game 2 -hitter, 90 pitches, next 2 games are no decisions, then another complete game shut out, last time out he gives up 5 runs in 4 innings.
Basically unless he pitches a complete game shut out and hits a home run, he’s not getting a win.
None of their starters has more than 3 wins, and Eovaldi sure enough since I first posted on this thread has given up another 2 runs for a total of 5 ER tonight.
The Fish are losing on the road again.
I like the kid they brought up from New Orleans that pitched last night though, Desclafani, he was great.
I think we’re going to see Heaney very soon. I certainly jinxed Eovaldi, didn’t I?

OK, how many old guys like me, out there ? I can remember when Tommy John was a pitcher, not a surgery ;)
